Z3 3.0 project

Hang in there mate she will be worth it once finished, these are very basic cars so the problems are never nothing too big.
Cheers Tony I will get there I'm looking towards 2029 she may just be completed by then!

I did a much better job myself at my first attempt! (If you do not count spraying a 64 Mini Cooper in cellulose back in the 70’s).

I think anyone could do a better job than that. He has agreed to re do it in the New Year. Just another c**k up and can't believe people would allow it to leave like that.

Celly was good, at least you felt happy doing it . . . . . ;)

2-pack is fantastic to spray with the right gun/compressor/workshop, but the lethal cocktail of chemicals means you absolutely MUST have the correct safety gear and ventilation.

Good that he has agreed a re-do. As you say how did they let it go like that - shoddy work and worse quality control.

So after getting several codes decided to bite the bullet and ordered, Crank case vent kit with all new pipes, purge valve, the 2 hard water pipes, rad sensor, block sensor, new gaskets, vacuum hoses
2 hrs later the manifold is off ready for the new bits to be fitted and found the manifold was only held on with 4 nuts (Should be 9) and one of the crank case breather pipes wrapped in insulation tape (why you would strip it apart to do that seems stupid) hence why the bottom was covered in oil.
So now its in bits decided to take the brackets off and spray them as they were rusty and when the final bits arrive time to rebuild!

I think getting the manifold on and off is one of the worst jobs with these engines. Keeping track and not loosing the little nuts is not an easy task but it doesn't explain why five of them were missing.

TBH I did not think it was too bad but I would recommend loosening off the manifold and wiggling it up and seeing what else is attached to it using a mirror. The procedure I had was for a left hand 4 cylinder which was as much use as a chocolate teapot! I gave up after trying to use that within the first 20mins. Its a pretty straightforward procedure. Putting it back I think will be harder!

Not sure if this will help you now as you have gotten this far but just in case:

I think I have got past it all now but cheers. :drinks:
The crank case vent pipes crumbled away in my hands and found a plug split on the manifold but the major PITA today was once I had removed the hard water pipes found that the ends had actually broken off in the block which took me ages to dig out. :bashhead:

Bang on there man, a selection of photos showing all the common age related wearing items. Fingers crossed she runs like a dream now.

P.S change the manifold to block seals.

Not sure if I was intoxicated when I wrote that. Yeah those orange seals between the Mani and block. She should run like a dream now :)

She should...but this car has a habit of finding something else for me to fix so I will not be holding my breath on that! If only she would behave like the Z4! lol

Let's hope she gives you a break this time.

Nope not yet went to fill up the coolant and decided to leak it all over the floor and now found the expansion tank has split and both ends of the pipe from the expansion tank to the new pipe I replaced are leaking. I dare not tell the missus she is already telling me to call it a day cut my loses and break it for parts.

Unbelievable.

Tony.
