z3 2.8 spluttering

Sounds like they don't want to do it rather than can't. PelicanParts have a step by step guide with photos of how to remove the inlet manifold.

i haven't done it on the 2.8 yet myself, but I followed the guide for the 1.9 (Figs 1-29) and it was daunting but entirely possible
 
Is there one of the forum "Zed Sheds" near you. The guys in these communities can properly solve the problem with their morning tea meat pie tied behind there backs.
 
Evening John or should that be ey up m’duck given our locations,
I took my car out yesterday and it is no better so because I know of no Zed sheds anywhere I am tempted to go down the Pelican route which you mentioned.
At step 25 the sensors are shown which I believe need to be replaced, the question is how doable is it working from home, for instance is all the work done from above or do I need to work from below.
The other problem is the time of year to be working outside, under cover but possibly rather cool!
Your thoughts please. Mick.
 
Which sensors need replacing? The camshaft sensors? Both done from the top, no need to remove the inlet manifold.

Sorry for the belated response, cold weather and a dicky back don’t go well together!,
Besides the fuel additive I have removed the air filter and given it a good spraying of STP carburettor cleaner both with it running and not running, all to no avail I sorry to say.
Because the road tax is shortly going to expire I have decided to bite the bullet and part with my little friend after all it has served its purpose, to own and drive a 6 pot.
So what do I do, does anyone want it for spares or repair or does it have to meet its maker?

Don’t give up. @t-tony is at Torksey Lock, only 42 miles away from you, so about an hour. He often runs a Zedshed day. I’m sure those boys would be able to sus it out & help you fix it

Ey up Mick, so sorry I didn't see your reply last year.

As GZed said, don't give up! If you didn't fancy tackling the sensors yourself, I would take it to another garage and tell them that is what you'd like doing (rather than asking them to diagnose the problem themselves).

I can really recommend JWS Motorworks at Holmewood (just off M1 J29). They're a BMW & MINI specialist who I've used for looking after my 5-series for the last few years and I've not had any problems with them. Nice guys and extremely knowledgeable.
