hi everyone, I live in New Zealand and have just purchased a 1997 z3 1.9 that has an aftermarket turbocharger. It was installed more then 8 years ago before it was imported from Japan. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with a turbo charged z3' at all? Thanks you all!

hi you need to know were it came from in case it goes wrong, for parts plus if it has not got one fit a turbo gauge , not to up on these but to much turbo i would have thought could do some damage..just my thought

Welcome mate. If its lasted 8 years already it must be well fitted. I would of thought running low boost to last so long.

Hi, it has no turbo gauge, no boost controller that I could find, no turbo timer. Thanks.

Thank you Lee, that's what I thought hence why decided to buy it. It is definitely running on low boost, someone told me no more then 4psi. But I' doing a major service, replacing all the fluids and filters a,d then planning to get the boost controller instaled. I want to run it on about 10psi and take it on a racing track, but I'm a bit worried the engine or auto gearbox might not be able to handle it.

That might be the case, I wouldn't recommend tracking her without giving her a full check over. Check the turbo spindle for play etc. The gearbox's are pretty robust they are bought from GM and also used on diesels with lots more torque.

Can you please post a good picture of the turbo? I have only seen the vehicles fitted with a supercharger! Cheers.

Welcome @SergeGray

Sounds an interest Z3 you have bought. I know nothing about turbos so can't really help, just wanted to say hi!

@TaffZee is that instant gasket stuff OK to put in Zed? I have a small leak and having looked everywhere I suspect the oil pan gasket is at fault. I will clean then ensure all is tight but I would not be looking forward to removing the cross bracing etc for my 2.2. :( if that proves to be the cause.

Sorry, is there an oil additive that can be used?
I think instant gasket is a rubber type material used instead of a gasket.

Cheers

I would Never Never Never use instant gasket for anything associated with the engine oil other than a tiny smear on a new gasket, stopping a leak with this stuff is rarely succesfull the only solution is a new gasket. And "No" no oil additive to stop leaks.

The bracing is easily removed!

Very few engines these days are built with anything other than silicon type liquid gaskets, having said that, these older cars weren't manufactured to such tolerances and where a gasket was originally fitted it should be replaced with another gasket. It's best to use manufacturers own gasket too. I was taught as an apprentice to lightly smear gaskets with grease to aid in stripping parts later on, never had a problem. The main reason gaskets leak is because the mating surfaces are a) not thoroughly cleaned before reassembly or more likely b) the the nuts, bolts, etc are over tightened which deforms the gasket.

Tony.
