Welcome!
That's a cracking start, I'll stay tuned.
Are you keeping Misty on the road and actually working on it there?

Hi All!

I heard a rumour that a good project/progress thread is appreciated - and if you're wishing to live vicariously or after a good laugh - here I am at the beginning of mine.

Misty is a 1998 Atlantic Blue 1.9L Z3 pic as my profile, but plenty more pictures here: https://goo.gl/photos/LXd4Sxmc2ErJpdjY9

Misty is also in pretty poor shape. Today I took her to a local BMW specialist for a vehicle check to find out precisely what needs doing to get her up to speed - it's a lot!

So I was advised by the chap there that I have a decision to make - save the £2500+ in parts and labour and buy myself another that is in better condition or start out on what is likely to be an expensive journey with no promise of a happy ending.

I said that I'd sleep on it. However...

I'm heading up to Redditch tomorrow morning to see Steve (Low Rider) to buy a new drivers door with a functional mirror and raising mechanism. Sunday I'm off to Woking to see Andy (spurs fan in a coupe) about other bits and pieces.

...think I've made my decision.

Wish me luck!

Any advice, comments, thoughts etc., whether related to forum/thread etiquette and style or pointers on what I should prioritise, or indeed anything constructive, are most welcome.

Frank and Misty
I think keeping what you've got and working on it is a better deal than buying a "better" car as you never know what lurks beneath. By the time you've finished yours (never really finished) you will have the car you want and one that you can trust. Only had mine 2 years and in that time I've done loads (garage mostly but low labour costs).
Rear window, disks, calipers, pads, hoses, pipes, rear shoes, complete cooling system, Diff and gearbox oil, inspection 2, shocks, springs and top mounts, horn, both door mirrors, hoops and deflector, respray (of sorts), powder coated wheels, K&N57i Induction United, Seat bushes ........... whilst a few £££££ I know what I've got and that she'll last donkeys years. Good luck :)

I agree with Andy above. You'll get to know your car inside out. I suspect a lot of what Mr BMW has listed won't be required, take your time and enjoy it. Had mine 4 or 5 years now and still at it

Thanks! Small steps, but a start nonetheless.

Yes, I don't have a garage or driveway but the road is fairly wide and relatively quiet for London. She is used on an almost daily basis, but for fairly short journeys. When I'm more confident in her mechanics, I'm sure a run to Europe will be on the cards.

It always sounds strange from a Yank's perspective when a Brit says this. We tend to think: "But you're ALREADY THERE!!!" It's similar to when I was visiting a friend in Wyoming and his friend told him he was going out West for his vacation...................Frankie

We have our own dream and our own task. We are with Europe, but not of it. We are linked but not combined. We are interested and associated but not absorbed. If Britain must choose between Europe and the open sea, she must always choose the open sea.”

As our greatest ever leader once said ;)
