And a potential disaster was averted, when Alejandro loosened the sump plug to drain the oil on Jim's blue 2.8 (as Jim and I were stripping off the N/S/F strut) and the head of the sump plug simply fell off after half a turn. You can see why below.

When it was previously fitted by a garage in Mansfield they must've over tightened it to the point of breaking.
The remaining part of the plug remained in the threaded hole in the sump but I removed it by using a set of Snap-on easy outs and a small spanner.

Sopers were on the ball and got a plug in stock by early afternoon and Paul Rice kindly took Jim to collect it.
The new plug was very different from the original, better?, I'm not so sure.

The new one is solid unlike the original and if tightened to excess would strip the thread in the sump. Either way job completed so Jim could drive home at the end of the day.
A busy day at the Shed today. In attendance Jjim, Brian4, Bringit96, Phil Patton (and son Ethan a good lad) and Paul Rice. Great fun, banter and butties:thumbsup:
Roll on the next one:). Thanks everyone.

Tony.

Sport I couldn't make it mate. Hopefully next time.

Wow excellent save there Tony with the sump plug . Imagine that happening to one of us mere mortals on the drive way .
Sorry I couldn't make it today.

Good job all round today and team effort as usual on all the jobs. Great that Tony has the experience and tools to deal with the sump plug and Paul for transport even if they were delayed admiring the new cars in their mucky work clothes..
Great to meet some new faces but bit unfortunate with the weather as it was very unsummery but never stopped progress.

Thanks for hosting Tony again.

PS also shows why bolts or nuts shouldn't be overtightened.

Dodged a bullet there! I’m one for stripping threads. Sheared the locking wheel nut on the OH DS3 earlier in the week. Bought some nut removal tools but haven’t attempted to get it out yet. I hope it comes off, it needs 2 new tyres and MOT this month.

Nice to see fellow zedders drinking tea i mean working together

Great result, well done :)

Would never think a sump bolt would snap like that.

Thanks to everyone yesterday. Thought the Zed would have to go into storage at @t-tony as for a while it looked like the rest of the bolt would be stuck in the sump. Very fortunate that Tony was able to get it out.

Sopers BMW in Lincoln didn’t have any sump plugs in stock but were able to get me one for 1:30pm. Very lucky and happy that they were able to get me one so quickly and save the day and allow me to drive home. Huge thanks to @Paul Rice for giving me a lift to pick it up.

We were able to all the jobs on my list done:
  • Front strut replaced
  • New spark plugs fitted
  • Oil service
  • Coolant change

As always a great day talking about cars and hitting things with hammers :D

Highlight for me was Paul trying to remove the wheel bearing nut by having the impact driver going the wrong way =))

Did you really have to mention that Jim, someone switched it whilst i wasn't looking

Same bloke who gave you that black eye maybe?=))

Tony.

Wiped the black eye off but not the bruised thumb, ouch!

It sounds a great and very productive day, everyone. Thank heavens that Tony was able to save the thread and everyone for rescuing Jim. Well done, everyone. Sorry I missed the Shed . I'm sorry I wasn't there but next time, fingers crossed. My mechanical education is a work in progress :)

Great work guys, sorry I couldn't be there this time. Hope to make the next one;)
