Yup. My winter tyres and wheels go on this week.

Interesting read that mate. Only trouble is, if you have several vehicles, storing a second set of wheels all year round could be a problem.
Although I am now considering it for Sara's car, as she's going to be doing some community nursing as part of her uni course and it'll mean a fair bit of comuting.

Yes winter tyres do make a world of difference, I am now looking for a set for our f48 X1and its 4wd.
Last year I was the only car that got up our road for 2 days ----- and both our cars made it as if it was a normal day.

Regards the comment about storing them--- yes. When I get the new ones I will have 3 set sets of winters, as I have a set from my previous e84 X1 [Pirelli Sottozero Winters 210 225/50R17 on steel wheels] and a set from my wife's Nissan QQ [ Michelin A4 Alpine 215/60R16]
If any one is interested they are for sale.

If it’s a light commuter car I’d look at all-season like the Michelin Cross climates.
Wouldn’t be great on a performance car in the summer but for a commuter call should be more than fine.

I have always had a set for my wife's fiesta as she drives like an idiot and she knows it.
Gonna get some cross climate for my 4x4 once the current ditch finders have worn a bit more.
Twinkle toes ( The Z) doesn't come out in the wet let alone snow

I ventured into Lincoln in my Z4 the day after this, last Feb. Dave,

It was "fun" to say the least;)

Tony.

Have a set of winters to go on Gail's car. Last year I couldn't get the summer wheels off - wouldn't budge. All the wheels went in the back of the LR and the local tyre place swapped them over for £15. Another £15 to swap them back in the spring. Still have to store them. Locked to the shed using a significant long steel cable.

Having a set put on the 330e on Friday. Ordered from BMW and they do a tyre hotel to store them. Have to be BMW wheels. They charge £30 for the year for storage and swapping them over twice per year. Better value than using the Indy.

My Z4 has SP4s. Won't venture out in winter unless it's dry.

Definitely ON mate. It was a nervous run on slick run flats ;)

Tony.

I have my winter wheels and tyres sitting here for the Skoda just about to go on .
They are great in cold wet roads and snow as well .:)
Just one minor issue I have decided and that is see when it snows winter tyres are great it's all the other people who don't have them that's where the issue arrises,
As its all fine and well being able to charge about when it's snowy and then find the main A road is blocked by some lorry stuck on one of the minor hills so then that leaves the back road.:eek:along the back edge of the carrick hills so open and exposed prone to drifting snow not a good idea (even in a proper 4x4,):nailbiting::nailbiting:
So in conclusion in this season winter tyres are great  apart from when it snows are everyone who doesn't have them still get in your way .:wideyed:

Always worth doing if you have the room, I have a set of winter wheels for Sam's zed so she can at least get around.

I always seem to manage when it snows, I do keep an emergency pack of snow socks in the boot incase I get caught out.

Snow socks are fantastic if the white stuff comes down.

I always keep the snow socks in the boot in the winter, they are excellent for when the snow is fairly deep.

winters tyres are on , on the one series, been using them for 7 years now and they are excellent, agree about the great wet weather qualities too.

, wheels look familiar......

The article was a very interesting read. However, it seems that the commentator failed to address the most common issue of how Brits drive in the snow..............................they don't. At least that's what I could gather by one of the photos from the article that pictured a decent snow fall in the UK and cars parked in the neighborhood. It struck me that almost no one went anywhere as none of the cars had been cleaned off for driving...............................................Frankie

Every year winter comes as a massive surprise to most British drivers @FRANKIE. Then the media scares everyone that it’ll be instant death or at least you’ll be lost out in the wilderness for weeks if you dare to go out as soon as the first snow flake lands in the Orkney Islands.

As for cleaning off the snow, of those that do dare to venture out, most don’t bother. As long as you have a dinner plate sized hole on the windscreen to see through then that’s good enough for most. No respect for the elements. Never learn from previous years. Just crass stupidity.

I used to go to Germany a lot on business where winter tyres are mandatory. The first winter I was there I picked up a hire car at the airport and was staggered how well they gripped on properly slippery surfaces. Been a convert ever since.

Agree. Winters put on the F30 yesterday. Even on days like today the car seems far more planted.
