When petrol is no more...

This was apparently the first landing whilst underway?

Tony.

When everybody had a horse, it was cheap to keep and "run" a horse. Now only horse enthusiasts have horses, they cost more to "run", but they are affordable.

I don't see it being any different with petrol cars.

The future is hydrogen fuel cells.

My reading seems to inform me that the whole life environmental cost of an electric car is currently worse than for an equivalent petrol car. But of course the man-in-the-street just looks at the cheapness of running the car, and thinks nothing about what went into making it, how the electricity is generated, and the cost of disposing of the car at the end of its life. As far as I can see, there aren't enough minerals in the world for everyone to have battery cars using existing technology. And that photo pgunter posted of the quarry speaks volumes.

The car makers are still producing brand new petrol AND diesel cars by the million, so fuel is going to be available for a long time yet. What surprises me is that many manufacturers, BMW included, keep on making the cars with more and more power and no hint of trying to make them more economical. It is still all about power and speed, as it always has been. And while I'm on my hobby horse, why is each new model nearly always larger and heavier than its predecessor? Wrong thinking to my mind.

I remember years ago it was proven that the environmental impact/carbon footprint of the Bentley Continental was far less than the Toyota Prius, due to the massive damage the mining and production of the battery causes. Then they have to ship the things to the factory, so before the hateful things are put together, the carbon footprint is massive!

Until fusion power plants are a viable option in some 20+ years, electric cars are still going to be causing pollution each time they charge up. Also as things are, the national grid is getting close to it's max capacity, so if millions suddenly went electric, they would be both brownouts and blackouts, if the UK doesn't build some more power stations.

I saw a programme the other day that said we shouldn't eat meat or drink milk because there are too many cows that give of bad gases from both ends and therefore the planet is doomed. Please add choice expletive.:(

Stuff em, I am fitting one of these and converting to steam

I wouldn't ...... They will soon be heavily taxed and logs will be too due to the pollution. If anyone builds an engine that runs on hot air we will be fine as parliament will keep us going... Maybe another thread there :banghead:

Pop by mine, they felled a ton of trees by me (I live opposite a brooke that leads onto a meadow) and they chopped them all up so locals could use them for firewood free of charge.

Could do with a few for my log burner here at home. Best thing I ever put in this old place was the little log burner. ;)

Because I take so many opiates for my spinal nerve damage, I run pretty hot, so the only heat I need during winter comes from my computer lol. Heck I would have put the roof down today if the weather wasn't so nasty as I was toasty even with the temp set to 18 in my Zed :)

Have you tried CBD oil? Or if your really adventurous and know a local pharmacist...

Is that the same as an Alchemist ............... ?

Tony.

Because it's a lot to do with nerve damage, I've found some things made them go haywire in the past. Next year they are going to be putting in a spinal implant stimulator on my spinal cord to sort out the issue for me.

Only way as I see it now the Labour mayor of London is banning log burning.

I see two huge issues that will slow the march of electric traction, both of which have been touched on in this thread. Firstly, this country does not have enough generating capacity to meet its current demands, let alone enough to charge up millions of electric car batteries. Renewable sources won't get near bridging the gap which probably means that the politically unpalatable option of more nuclear power generation will come back onto the table.
Secondly, the total lifecycle effect on the environment of current battery technology seems to be little understood by the politicians who think electric cars are the saviour of the world. Once that environmental effect becomes more clear, electric cars will grab the headlines for all the wrong reasons. A bit like rush to get everyone to buy a diesel a few years ago. First it was good for the planet and then suddenly it wasn't. What goes around, comes around.....
