When petrol is no more...

My reading seems to inform me that the whole life environmental cost of an electric car is currently worse than for an equivalent petrol car. But of course the man-in-the-street just looks at the cheapness of running the car, and thinks nothing about what went into making it, how the electricity is generated, and the cost of disposing of the car at the end of its life. As far as I can see, there aren't enough minerals in the world for everyone to have battery cars using existing technology. And that photo pgunter posted of the quarry speaks volumes.

The car makers are still producing brand new petrol AND diesel cars by the million, so fuel is going to be available for a long time yet. What surprises me is that many manufacturers, BMW included, keep on making the cars with more and more power and no hint of trying to make them more economical. It is still all about power and speed, as it always has been. And while I'm on my hobby horse, why is each new model nearly always larger and heavier than its predecessor? Wrong thinking to my mind.

Petrol needs to at least double in price to become expensive in comparison... If you compare the price increase in petrol, house prices and wages over the past 10 years I think you will find that petrol is relatively good value  especially if you add the increase in ciggarette cost into the mix....:nurse:

There is no energy based technology today that doesn't have any environmental impact. The nirvana of hydrogen cell technology will still need valuable rare earth metals to be used in catalysts to start the energy creation process inside the fuel cell, never mind the production and management of the electrolytes that are use, especially those types that run at 1,000 deg C to operate. On top of that is the production, management and storage of hydrogen. And, to produce hydrogen, you need power. None of this stuff is easy.

But, I suppose constraining the impact to the earth and managed at the production stage is a better option rather than polluting the whole of the atmosphere.

Back to the bicycle soon ;)

Case in point the new BMW X7.

Tony.

Or a horse, you can't eat a bike ;)

True but their riders will!=))

Slightly OT here but talking of economy, the Navy's new 'Carrier does approx. 80 meters per gallon of Diesel.
So I just learned on TV.

Tony.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo from me too!

They landed a Chopper on it and popped its cherry, planes next year. I guess it's an old programme?

Tony.

Sorry you Nooooooo guys but if you eat any other kind of meat you can't say that.

Absolutely. There is what to me looks like a truck with windows that will do 0 - 62 in 6.1 seconds. Why? How much fuel will that take to shove a two ton vehicle with shed-like aerodynamics at that speed? Bonkers.

British Navy pilots have landed US Navy F-35Bs in training over the pond. British planes are due land sometime soon - when we have some.

They set sail back for the UK yesterday.

When they do get UK aircraft, they will still be US built, they should never have scrapped the Harriers. The Americans are still using them.

They had loads of helicopters landing and taking off from it while she was berthed at her jetty at Pompey docks. HM the Queen arrived by helicopter for a visit a couple of months back.
