Never thought of that, I used a small screwdriver for tightening glasses, worked a treat.

Lots of the white dust under the dash, think the light switch will be the next job!
The white dust is from the potentiometer assembly to dim the dash lights. Many Z3s have the issue. But then many Z3s end up with dash dimmers not working properly!

Dr Wong you should ask yourself why the central locking fuse blew before thinking it’s fixed the problem permanently. Fuse blew on mine recently and I went straight to the boot loom and stripped it back, sure enough wires were chaffed showing bare copper, none were completely broken as I have seen on other cars. Repaired with insulating tape to the individual wires and rewrapped. Area affected was where the loom is clipped to the lid hinge area I left mine free so it doesn’t get trapped when the lid is closed and also slipped some split plastic conduit over the loom to add a bit more protection. So far all is back to normal.

Indeed mate. Fuse blew again not long after I posted that message. This time I did strip the loom back and lo and behold, many broken wires etc. A bit of solder, heat shrink, and TESA tape later, and all’s well with no issues since:thumbsup:

My experience of loom of doom:
  1. 9 out the 10 Z3s I currently own, have previously owned or my brother's have ever (touch wood) experienced loom of doom issues
  2. The odd one out is one of my projects. As bought it had a loom of doom issue, fuse blew, cheap Chinese fuse put in it, fuse didn't blow on short circuit, car started to smoke and loom melted. New loom required as documented here.

So I think the moral of the story is indeed listen to the fuses! So well done @DrWong !

Yep, I’d read that thread of yours and it was one of the reasons I stripped the loom immediately the second time it happened. Didn’t like the thought of the Z perishing in an electrical fire.!

Loos like yours was damaged at around the same spot as mine, where the loom is clipped to the side hinge bracket. Mine were not as bad as yours, none btroken just chaffed revealing copper core, hence the blown fuse. Seems the clip puts too much strain on the loom and over time the wires get damaged. I fixed another members loom, his was green and crusty with many of the wires broken, new solder joints and heatshrink applied and all was restored. His symptoms were central locking failing and alarm triggering.
