Can anyone tell me what this is? A small circular (?) switch marked 0 - 1 - 2 between the steering column and the centre console. It also has a headlight motif with up and down arrows. It does not seem to do anything. Puzzled.

That is your headlight adjuster, 0 being the normal position 1 & 2 for when you're carrying a Roo or crates of 4X in the boot. Prevents you blinding the Sheila's on their way back from the sheep shearing contest in their ute's. :D.

You'd have to be an ex-pat. Nah, an ex-pat would know that there is only room for one carton of lunatic soup and two bottles of overproof Bundy rum in the boot.

As Eddie said it’s a headlight adjuster.

So if the rear is heavier your able to readjust the headlight angle.

Pretty useless on a Z3 as you don’t tow anything.

Park the car facing a wall or garage door and move the switch with the headlights on, you should see the beam pattern move up and down very slowly when you operate the switch.

I suppose I might have to wait until dark time for it to work?

It's a bit hit and miss as to whether the motors / switch will work or not, they're not the best of German / American engineering.

My MOT tester said that this is now a fail item if it doesn't work, and it's retrospective regulation. If this is so, blanking plates will become valuable!:(

The mech who did the road worthy cert to get my Zed registered and on the road had never even seen a Z before. Oz is a great place, especially out here away from the cities.

Incorrect info Ian. The tester has to check the aim as the vehicle is presented, if it passes, it passes. IF it does not then the tester can adjust the switch to see if it will then pass, or not.

Tony.

I hope you are correct tony. My MOT tester is very reputable and switched on. Said it is a new requirement, think from May 2019? Sincerely hope he is wrong on this occasion.

Taken from https://www.motester.co.uk/mot-test-of-lights/

Headlamp alignment

Headlamps alignment is checked with specialised equipment.

All dipped beam headlamps fitted will be checked.

It’s acceptable for masks or converter kits to be fitted to right hand dip headlamps to temporarily alter the lamp for use in the UK by removing the beam ‘kick-up’ to the right.

If driver’s beam aim controls are fitted, the beam aim will be Tested without altering the control setting. If this would result in failure for beam aim being too low, the Tester will re-check the beam aim with the control set at its ‘highest’ position.
