Tommy's Z3 Turbo drift car

Magnificent job there Tommy, hope you all raised some good amount for Children in Need mate. Very nice pictures and at least one for next years calendar in my humble opinion.

Tony.

Been a while again guys my apologies, I have some pretty awesome media to show you afew weeks back we went to 3 sisters race track in Wigan for some much needed seat time
On the first lap (literally 2nd corner) the car decided it didn't like 2nd gear any more and threw it out the gearbox But no worries us race mechanics can change gearboxes in our sleep right ??? Lol so we decided to change the gearbox and aim to get out for the afternoon sessions
Here's how we did it View attachment 45407

So 3 hours later we had a gearbox delivered and fitted and ready to go out for the afternoon sessions

Car ran faultless the rest of the day untill the last session where the manifold started to blow slightly due to a dodgey thread in the head
Top work @Tommy Bates

Rock on Tommy

Great photos and vids

Bloody amazing thread thanks Tommy:thumbsup:keep it up to date please:whistle:

Wow it's been a while again guys!!!

Right so I decided afew months back I wanted to stick the old girl on the road and come on some cruises and shows with you lot,
however it wasn't realy show standard and it was getting abit tatty in places so what better excuse to strip it down and refurb it and also upgrade afew things on the way.

First I started making some stainless hard pipes to tidy up all the hoses everywhere.

Il finish them off when I can afford some gas for my tig welder

Next we started stripping the front ready to get the m50 out

And that's where we at so far

Next jobs

Clean engine and repaint
Refit engine
Relocating headlight wiring, already started that

Once the fronts all done il do the same on the rear as that's needed some attention for a long time

And then il work more on my custom body kit (yes I sed it , some of you may not like this part lol)

Theirs afew ideas if the style I'm going for

Here's where I'm at so far, personally I've never liked the standard skirts on z3s and the aero skirts are like rocking horse poo so I thought I'd steal some off a 200sx , These are dmax skirts and I'm going to modify the bumper to match

Don't mater what you do Tommy, it's your car. Personally I'm looking forwards to see where you go with this. It's so far from a standard car it doesn't really matter any more. Keep up the good work mate.

Tony.

Made a little progress today , striped cleaned and painted the inlet side of the engine and also made a little engine stand because it's such a pain working on a slanted engine on the ground it just wants to fall over

Like your style mate.

Tony.

Seem to have a habit of warping manifolds , anyone have any idea what caused this to happen ??? I'm no expert when it comes to metal properties

This was blowing before I removed the engine and it's easy to see why now

Two main things can cause / exasperate warped flanges

  • no relief cuts on cast flange
  • flange not thick enough so cant take the heat (that doesn't look very thick)

My best guess would be it could be down to how you tighten the fixings Tommy.i would start at the centre and work outwards. Do you torque these or do it from experience mate?

Tony.

Got it back from skimming

The guy who did it found a heat patch where the downpipe has been heating it up , and it's twisted from that patch so I need to remake the downpipe and engine mount so I can go under it

Kinda like this but my turbo is at the front as it's RHD

I did torque them mate but it warped so bad it has pulled out the threads on the front of the head for the manifold so il have to Helicoil them

Can't moan to much though it was kind of a untested setup and this is the only issue I've had and it not going to be to hard to sort

Better get the tig welder out
