Have you cleaned the idle control valve? The ICV controls the revs up to about 2,500 rpm, then the throttle body kicks in.

The car has been sitting inside and started once or twice a week to move it around with no problems at all. The battery was robbed for another car and a weaker replacement fitted. Sometimes it will start on its own, sometimes needs the jumper pack. Then suddenly the throttle problem. If it was the fuel pump or filter I can't see it being an instant problem. More likely electrical problem and I am leaning towards an ECU problem caused by using the battery pack to jumpstart it.
Anyone know of a mobile BMW specialist in the Maidenhead area?
I use CPC Performance in Amersham. Phil Crouch, the owner, knows more about BMWs than anyone else I've ever met. He is hard to contact but don't lose heart - try from 07:00 on his landline. http://www.cpcpe.com/

Gave the IVC a clean when it was removed.
I have a cheapo scanner that pulled a few codes, I find Z3's a bit hit and miss when trying to read codes. On this one a 2002 2.2 I can only connect to the round plug under the bonnet. On my 2000 2.8 I can only connect to the plug under the dash.
I have on the 2.8 tried a professional garage scanner with the same results.
CPC look good but I need a mobile service as the car has been stripped of all its outer panels.

Then Simon Besant may be able to help simon.besant@btinternet.com
Simon is a Westfield Sports Car Club member and runs a mobile mechanic business. I use him occasionally and he is pretty knowledgeable. He's in Wycombe.

UPDATE

Had an electrician round to have a look. Plugged in and no sign of the throttle and throttle body connecting. Put a MAF from a 2.8 onto the 2.2 and the connection was visible but as soon as the throttle was pressed it coughed and then the connection was gone.
Bought a new MAF from eBay for £23 and all is now working correctly.
