Greetings y'all,

So.....been looking and hunting for a fun Roadster. I really wanted a Boxster....but the dreaded IMS issues on earlier cars, give me the horrors and later ones are too much money. No...I'm not a Porsche snob or something, but I wanted to try another Marque other than Beemer.......I'm a lifelong Beemer lover and have owned 2 x E46 M3's (one was a vert SMG, the other a tin top manual and VERY special), a 330Ci Clubsport, an E36 Alpina (should never have sold it), an E28 535i, E30 530i, E38 530d, E60 535d.....to be honest, the list goes on and on.....and so, I decided to buy a 3.0l Z4 as I'd never owned one and those engines are just so good.

Theres been some on here for sale on AutoTrader and "PistonBrokes" that are just AMAZING, but I just wanted a cheap ish car that I could use over winter, get on top of, modify and enjoy next Summer.....and I just bought one on auction, without seeing it, as its quite close. It's an 04plate, 3.0 SE, with Sat Nav, Cruise, Black Leather and Metallic grey. 110k miles I think, with an Auto box (keep the missus happy) and 11 stamps in the book.....and I haven't seen it yet. First thing I did, was post this!!!!

Am I being a mug? Whats the most common issues (can already see the wheels are a bit s**t and tyres are cheap n nasty....so they will get swapped)? I need to go over it before parting with the cash. How can I tell if they are Xenon headlights or not (I'm guessing they are Halogen projector jobs)? Lastly....think I will need a nice sounding exhaust to start with.....recommendations gladly accepted!!!! Saw a guy on here that mods your box and sends back by post....am I right? NEED TO DO THIS!! My Clubsport never sounded good enough

Glad to be here folks

Hi and welcome from Warwickshire.
Apart from changing wheels to 108s I have a pretty much stock example. Makes it pretty quiet compared to many.

Relocating the roof motor to the boot is a must. The original location is prone to filling with water which eventually seizes the motor. Even if seized they can be resurrected.
Mine is a facelift so has the later N52 engine. VANOS issues (solenoids and seals) are common but being a lifelong beemer addict you’ll probably know about those. That and the Disa valve.

The auto box is something of a quandary at that mileage. Many recommended a flush and oil change but that isn’t without risk. That is an expensive rebuild if the friction materials have parted company with clutch bands. BMW say the box is filled for life, but, they mean 100k miles for life. There have been some boxes that have failed soon after a fluid change.
Some will recommend changing the transmission oil other say leave it alone. I don’t know the answer. Experience from others would be welcome on this.
Had the box in my Disco 4 changed and it was totally transformed but that was a recommendation from ZF.

As soon as you get it there will be requests for photos.

Oh no...!!! Don’t tell me Auto’s are a big issue!! I only went auto cos the missus won’t drive manuals anymore...!! Are they THAT bad??? Now I’m biting my nails. Getting a gearbox flush done is easy for me....mate has a garage

Not saying they’re a big issue. It’s a bit of a quandary on whether to flush and change. Many have done so without problems. There is a risk though. 95% of the time or more it will be fine. If the friction material is well worn though you can end up with no drive. One of the joys of motoring. The point is there is just the chance you might cause more problems than you solve. Doing it in that knowledge is better than finding out afterwards.

Mine is an auto and it’s great. Have a 3 series with the 8 speed zf box. That is hardly noticeable except on the rev counter.

Tony’s is barely run in though Dave. I suspect he has probably done his already knowing him.

Not even considering doing the Z4, did my Z3 at roughly 70K. Z3 was improved by doing it as was my mates 7 series when he had it done.
I've been on here several years now and there are quite a few Auto owners on the forum and I have yet to hear of anybody having Auto box problems so I wouldn't lose too much sleep.:)

Tony.
