When I was a manager in the motor trade I had to do all the FSA papers to be able to run the sales and finance teams. The threshold on transactions was constantly being dropped and being updated. When I started the job we could accept upto £10000 in cash against any one transaction. When I came out the job 4 years later that figure was down to £2500 with heavy proofs of I.D. We had a big problem with our travelling community friends turning up with in some cases £40000+ in cash in carrier bags to buy Range Rovers. I kid you not!
Now I am not a traveller, but once boarded an aircraft with £250,000 in a hold all, going out to Alicante from Liverpool. and then brought it all back three days later. I Kid you not, never been so nervous in my life.

I know scary stuff. On my boys life a "pikey" walked into the showroom with £46000 in tesco carrier bags to pay for a Range Rover. He couldn't believe we turned his business away. He then sent his kids in to nick all the sets of car mats for sale in the showroom !

A mate of mine did the same, have no idea how he managed it. When the banks in Cyprus had to declare bank accounts, he flew down there and emptied his and flew back through Amsterdam and came to see me for a beer with two holdalls full of $, Christ knows how much was in them and the next day he flew out from Amsterdam to the UK and did the whole trip with out any problems...o_O

Maybe next year I'll float on the stock exchange and you can buy as many 1p shares as you like then!

Thanks for all the efforts, did you decide on a bank account or are you persevering with PP?
I think PayPal remains the sensible decision for the forum moving forwards. It's worked fine for me so far running the sites dedicated PayPal account, and I think most people feel comfortable with it. I don't really like handing out bank details, or asking for bank details if at all possible. There is also better protection for both parties with PP.

firstly, before I rant, I should say I run a Limited Company for protection and accept payments by PayPal, under duress.

@GazHyde you've demonstrated what is so wrong with this country. If any organisation could be accused of money laundering it is PayPal, they extract millions of pounds in profits from transactions in this country and then "process" it all in Luxemburg to avoid paying tax on their profits in the UK. Oh, just like eBay, Starbucks, Asda..... the list goes on.

As @Grumpy said, Pikey's are running around with carrier bags full of cash. I've also had the misfortune of experiencing a pikey's cash dealings.

But little old Gaz running a "hobby" website is basically accused of being a criminal and it is down to you to prove to a foreign, tax dodging company that you are not and the only thing they will accept is a formal business arrangement.

£2500 is absolutely nothing in this day and age but I think you'll find it is PayPal rather than HMRC causing the problem. Zroadsters.org doesn't fall into the money laundering criteria in any way, shape or form.

To be honest Limited Company law is a bit of a farce in the UK, but when you operate at the mercy of our authorities and lawyers, directors need a buffer to hide behind.

ps, bring me a hat and a sticker to Duxford, I'll pay cash, used notes, no questions!

Thanks for your comments @smiffy!

PayPal in the main works for what I need it to site wise - I see it as a necessary evil. The forum software closely integrates with PayPal meaning if someone donates the system automatically promotes their account and gives them access to the extras - meaning less manual processing and time taken out of my day. Bank transfer or cash means I have to track it, figure out who sent it and then process changes on the forum.

I'm currently self employed (not under a Ltd company) and I don't think I could ever get to the point where I would take PP for work undertaken!

Really, you want to try buying a property in the USA, then you'll know how it feels to be under the microscope.;)

It is about time they clamped down on you mobsters and racketeers. They should do an inspection and make sure you are complying with COSHH. I made a typo when logging on and put zmobster.org. Yes it logged me in.
Another site which I follow is Hickok45. It is an American shooting site run by Hickok45 and his son. They test fire arms and ammunition and they are on a Google site and also on Facebook. Google have just closed the site down and as they now own Facebook, they have closed that down as well. No reason. They can do it so they have done it.

Darn, forgot to hide zmobster on the dark Web...

I subscribe to Hickok45 on YouTube. Just did a quick search and the channel has been reinstated again so that's good. The explanation that's been given seems plausible why it got suspended.

I'm "Acting Treasurer" for a charity at the moment. It took about a year to get charitable status. Lots of paperwork and questions....
