Mud flaps are a rot magnet, always have been.
Front's maybe but not the rears as the bumpers are plastic. They do a decent job of stopping stone chips on the front sills and wings which leads to rot if left untreated so they can be beneficial. But only if they are taken off at regular intervals to keep whats behind nice and clean.

For the average owner that will never do this then they are certainly rot magnets. Although I've seen just as many sills that have never had mudflaps fitted which are rotten, it's just a common problem on the Z3 mudflaps or not. Fitting a set can just speed up the process unless regularly maintained.

I have a set fitted to cover up some previous rot which I treated and it's not 100%. Prior to this they never had a set fitted and they still started to rust. When I fit my new sills I will probably still put them back on just to protect the front edge of the sills and wings from stone chips. But I will have them off on a regular basis to keep whats behind pristine.

nice work fellas, most of the bolts on my 2.8 sills have been loosened last year in readiness to fit a spare set i have here, i hoping to m.o.t. the 2.8 this week, so the outcome of the m.o.t. will determine if i have to rush and get the spare set fitted....

removed passenger side sill today as i had a little poke about in the back part of the sill and most of it came away with little effort crusty and rusty, so got the sill off no point in taking for m.o.t. as it would only fail... anyway give the inner sills a good wire brushing and got off all the loose rust, tapped any flaky stuff off with hammer and got compressor in the holes to blow out all the crap, flap wheel on grinder and inner sills back to bare metal in no time treated with red oxide temporarily fitted a couple of screws in one of the sills @mwpe gave me last year looks like it will all fit nice going to have another looks tomorrow and take the sill off ready to be primed and painted in montreal blue, going to get some brush on underseal or something else to put over the red oxide as not really the best thing to leave on the inner sills.. anyway so glad i took this off today and caught it just in time

Would not, or at least, should not fail its test for corroded outer sills Al. They are simply bodywork NOT structural items.

Tony.

Looks like the jack pads are fitted in one of you photos. If not done already, take these out and treat the rust that you are almost certain to find under them.

Times 2 for removing the rubber jack pads. That's where some of the worst corrosion was on mine. Just caught it in time.

Those red inner sills are like the pink boxer shorts I had on the other day. My other half said lovely but please don't have a crash in them as she'd never recover from the embarrassment :)

Mine are Ok but yes agree with you, I did all the same treatment all along both sills and pads as well.
