I never understood what was so good about the Interceptor. It just looks a mish mash of random styling elements. Really not for me at all...
Those were the days of late 60's excess. There were many cars about that fell into the "Grand Tourer" Sports category. They didn't last long as the early 70"s oil crisis put paid to them.
These cars are all trying to out "Grand" each other with very large engines and a sort of look at me styling. They were a product of their time. The Swinging Sixties, The South Of France and chic! Europe was opening up and continental holidays were possible. Exciting!
This is the AC Frua or 428. It is the progression on from things like the DB6 Aston Martin. It's in the same vein as the Jensen. It was a time of plenty and then the oil famine started. This car did around 8 mpg. It fell out of fashion very quickly! It was the height of motoring excess and chic. The peak. A little like the super car thing thats been going on over the last few years. If you look at the Bugatti Veyron it's an impressive car, but whatever is the point? I actually don't think its really a very pretty thing. But it's a product of the time we live in. The Oligarch and super rich of the world, the Super Yacht and the cash being less well spread.
Taking a peek at the cars of their day will give you a sort of social history of the 20th. century. It'll tell you how economies were doing and of peoples aspirations.
So with the Jensen there probably was no point either, even at the time. It was just a social statement. But I still think it's quite a pretty car.
