Thanks for the feedback Steve, it's good to know. I've got to take the rubber hoses off all the way back to the inlet manifold and swap them over if i want to go down this route. Its only £25 for the replacement hoses, but i need to see if its a job i can do. I just have a really weird setup on my 2.2 which includes an air intake resonator boot which when checked is parts from a e39 525i??? No idea why it's on mine?

Not sure about the air intake set up in your 2.2, maybe @Lee or @pgunter could advise.

So I checked another thing off the list of pointless tasks to do but something i wanted to do.
I changed the Diff oil. After 16 years but only 38k miles, i thought why not.
3 things i learned though. I will never do it again because of the smell, don't trust an aussie for parts and my spare tyre cannot be removed.
I am fortunate to have a pit at home making the job a lot easier to complete, but it also means that any Diff oil stinks out the house in a similar fashion to a gas leak smell. Not pleasant and i'm burning through candles and frebreeze to dispose of it.
I bought new gaskets from a buyer on eBay based in Australia, these were rubber gaskets and to my surprise did not hold up to the torque setting when refitting, so the original metal gaskets got a clean and were refitted. No leaks so far.
The spare tyre was restricing my ability to use the torque wrench, i thought it would be an easy task to remove, but the 16mm bolt in the wheel well is firmly rusted in place, so i had to tighten up without removing the tyre. Oh what an hour this simply oil change was meant to be.

Things to note, i nearly used 2L of oil, not sure if that's is because mine needed more against the handbook guideline because it has a LSD?
There are 2 types of gasket, rubbers and metal. Be sure to know which you have before starting the job, or like me you try to replace a gasket, after filling the diff with oil, probably the cause for the smell. Change your diff oil at a garage our outside to avoid contamintation in your house.

The oil on the way out wasn't too bad a colour i thought. Probably could have stayed without a worry.
 
I'd say that's not the original oil after doing 6 or so zed diffs to date. Very clean. Still worth doing though, done mine twice in the last 2 years.
 
The garage finally had the upgrade it needed. I can now see all the imperfections on my car in the garage rather than taking it outside. £54 never made such a big difference before!

Fortunately it came with the house when we bought it, but it was built in time when the garage was further left, the pit is not centre so cars have to be angled in to work under :banghead:
 
I dug the pit on my garage about 30 years ago. Wouldn't want to do it again though.

Some winter work has finally begun, i've managed to remove the rear wheel arch, add a nut, bolt and washer because the rear bumper wasn't neatly attached in the corners, looks like on a previous respray some screws had broken off and not been replaced.
Removed the passenger seat to replace the bushings, FYI:

And i masked up and gave the door handles a refresh with some black paint, help to get rid of the fade

There is one thing i'd like to ask the audience on, when i took off the back wheel on the passenger side, i noticed something on the back of my exhaust, anyone have a clue as to what it is or why it's there?

I certainly have one on the back of my 2.2. It's a vibration damper apparently:thumbsup:
 
Same on mine, it was flopping about so I unbolted it and the car still works so I don't worry. Too much.
It’s less of a worry and more of a what the hell is that? Especially as it isn’t attached to the body in any way, only the exhaust. Thanks @Mint
