Well I've decided to make up 10 more "M" style gearshift surrounds - that means ten people who want the chromed / polished or brushed aluminium gearshift surround now have the chance to get one before Xmas...
Basic price is £60 for polished or brushed aluminium
Chromed extra £10
P&P £10 to UK /EU and £12 to N.America,
50% on placement of order balance when I have posted.
All packages sent Registered airmail / signed for with tracking number.

The new fitting system I have just recently designed means fitting will take aprox 10 minutes. ( depends on how long a little contact glue takes in your weather conditions to cure ).... In fact it's so simple, and easy, you might be able to do it in 5 minutes....;)

Some pics of what you can expect once fitted....

Thanks Sean - you're down for one. Please send me a pic or post a pic of the gearknob and handbrake handle so I can see what you're fitting.

That now leaves only 8 more - (so far one fella on .net too)

Heres the link Barry, I think I am going to the titanium so chrome might be best, black chrome would be perfect

Hi Sean
I have found a guy here who can do the black chrome finish. Apparently he applies a silver nitrate to the object and that will give it the right finish. He charges £16 to do this treatment. Also, please bear in mind, that the Storm kit you're fitting has been titanium coated. This is applied in the form of a gas at around 450 C. It forms a thin film on the steel which is why you can see the "brushed" look on the knob in the photographs on the link you provided. The finish on the gearshift surround will be more like glass - ie. very smooth and probably very similar in gloss to your piano black painted finish on the console. The reason it'll be so smooth is that the aluminium must be mirror finish polished for the effect to work. personally, I think it will look stunning with the work you've done on the console.
I hope that will be satisfactory.
Barry

I was thinking that the surround will be a bit to much like piano black so I think we will stick with chrome as it will tie in with the chrome rings on my dash, thanks Barry

image.jpg Hi @Southernboy, I wish now this had crossed my mind before ordering my ring! The black chrome would have blended well with my ACS pedals which are black. Oh well, maybe powdercoating will suffice! Darn @Sean d causing problems for me!! lol. JIM

You can take it to an electro plater there - ask them to do a silver nitrate treatment on it. Fortunately for you, your part isn't chrome plated, so all you need do is polish it until it's absolutely mirror flawless, then get it treated. It'll come out black...;)

This sounds good Barry.

Do you know if the chrom rings around the heater controls and clock can be done this way to match?
I'm thinking it will look nice for those of us with the brushed aluminiun trim:

I can't say definitively, but those trims are made from plastic which has been chrome plated. The black chrome finish would have had to have been applied before the chrome. The only alternative you have is to use a paint like Dupli Colour who make a two can kit to mimic the effect. It's basically a can of a black paint and a can of clear coat which is applied to a previously chromed surface. From the write up on google, it's a reasonable result. Moto Storm in the USA do a "hyper silver" black chrome paint too, which is considered excellent. Both brands are commonly used by wheel re-furb people to achieve the effect, so very durable and chip resistant. Perhaps pop into a wheel re-furb shop and ask the fellas if they can do anything on the chrome rings, they likely would, since they do it on wheels.

Thanks Barry, I'll see if I can find a co in Winnipeg that can do it. My friend's Dad owns a co that makes chrome furniture parts maybe she can check if they do the black chrome for me! This has the wheels in my head spinning with possibilities.

Isn't it fun using a little imagination and at least finding out how far you can take the idea... I have never soldered brass to aluminium, but today I found a co here who reckon they can supply me with the correct flux and a roll of the correct solder to achieve that...Now the question is, do I learn how to do it, or do I opt for the easier 2 part epoxy bond. The epoxy is way cheaper, but the experience of successfully joining 2 different metals with a third metal tickles me...
