I started this thread as was concerned that the engine seemed towarm up too quickly, so today went for a run to the Peak district, engine ran fine , back over road Buxton to Macclesfield, with all its twists, cheked engine on return all cool and fine so , obviously temp gauge is supposed to act in that way
I confirm the same behaviour, even on cold days as nowadays: time to take the car out of the garage and courtyard and the gauge it's straight up. When my thermostat was faulty (stayed oppened) the gauge went sometimes (especially downhill) to 1/3 of the scale, which it's not good at all. Conclusion: it's normal.
Did you found the reason of the coolant loss? Are the pipes well tighten? Can you detect any coolant losses when the engine is cold, maybe the pipes got some fine pores?

@zedonist is it OK to unhitch the OBD connection, insert the ELM and zip tie it under the steering column to keep it safe from being accidentally hit with my feet? I mean, to leave the ELM permanently connected... :)
I imagine so, I have to use the under bonnet OBD port on mine, and all I do is gaffer tape the cable to the strut brace so I can map during a drive.
