You should put on headlight deflectors too. But we just take the same as what Miller mentioned but you should have 2x Triangles and a Vest for each passenger which needs to be carried in the cab area of the car. Also if going to Switzerland and driving on any Motorways you will need a Vignette

Interesting comments in this post! Would any experienced European Z travellers be willing to share their do's and don't's in preparation for travelling through Europe - France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain etc. including the driving legalities UK drivers have to adapt to - daytime / nightime driving, registration plate regulations etc?

Thank you

David.
That's a valid point David. I've only rented cars in Holland or Germany so would be interesting to know what to expect as I think our next big trip will be to Scotland to start ending in Holland.

All we do is carry documents .bulb set, breathalyser kit florecent waistcoat triangle
Is the breath kit for the officer because I sat with a couple of motorcycle cops drinking beer while they were on duty discussing their bikes and what I had back home? JIM

Jim it is there sort of toll/road tax charge and sticks onto the windscreen. A Vignette costs 30 to 40 quid and lasts for 12 months otherwise it is a heavy fine if you get caught without one driving on motorways. If you can proove you will not be driving on Motorways then you dont need to get one, but for the price it is better to be safe than sorry

A bit like the Sunpass in Florida then?

I remember having to pay for something when we left Lichtenstein and went into Switzerland. That's likely along the line of what you mentioned. Don't remember any other country that did the same at the time though and we covered Holland, southern Germany/Austria, Lichtenstein, northern Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and north France. Great memories but we don't ever plan ahead we just go wherever the mood takes us with the only actual stops to visit friends. JIM

A lot of points have been raised above, but for up to date info on each country I use http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/overseas/general_advice.html .
When budgetting allow for motorway/auto.....etc tolls which can add up to a hefty sum. The Swiss system mentioned previously seems pricey when you first pay it but it's a lot cheaper than the French Autoroute tolls.

Don't carry any cash
We learned that for the next trips we took. Unfortunately my wife had just withdrawn 2000DM as we were headed into Austria. Could have been worse, no one was seriously injured considering two cars were totally demolished. JIM

If you have Euro Number plate then you dont need the GB sticker and yes 2x Breathalysers so if one is used you still have one available
