That's correct. Mine didn't have these to start with - I added them when I replaced the rear shock mounts.

I'm inclined to agree with garythefish about the state of your new rsm - looks like it's split. Do you have anymore pics?
 
After having a second look (Glasses on), the bush does look extended as though it has pulled through..................duff bush
 
It is not an aftermarket part as such but an official BMW upgrade as they found evidence in the early days of the top mount points bending so issued this upgrade to stiffen the mounting points.

I have to agree though it looks like your top mount rubber has failed albeit new and unfortunatly you will have to do it all again. :(

are you saying that it may be the center metal tube that had came away from the rubber mount?
 
They can split around the circumference thus weakening the rubber bush, the tube will still be attached.
 
THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY

Ok this rattling noise is driving me crazy, so today i had the car up on the ramps in my mates garage

we replaced the rear shocks and the top mounts, checked the rear bushes anti roll bar bushes etc

put the car back down drove it 100 yards and it still Bl**dy still rattles

Help before i go mad... :(( :(( :(( :(( :((
 
It might sound like a simple thing but I remember on my last zed I had s rattle from the seat belt D rings which for all the noises in the world sounded as though it was coming from under the car but turned out to be just a simple fix of adjusting the belt and it stopped rattling. My Z3M doesn't do this and is rattle free do forgot about it until now when you have got me thinking, may not be the cause in your case but worth checking.

They are the metal guide rings where the seatbelt exits the plastic trim just behind your shoulder. My passenger one was the culprit and used to rattle but if I got hold of the seatbelt whilst driving you could temporarily stop it.
 
Ok today i looked in the small inspection hatch at the top of the trim at the roll bar

looking in the first thing i see is this just lying there

what is it and more importantly where does it go ?

how do you get the trim off to get better access to the belt reel?
 
You'll need to take the roll hoops out you can see the two fixing screws in your pic and there's another in the cubby hole between the seats. I wouldn't bother taking them off though unless the seatbelt reels are loose. Not sure where that bit goes so can't help on that one.
 
Mmm, that's interesting does ignorant look as though it is broken off something. If I get chance I will have a look this weekend in mine and see if there is anything similar.

also i cant get my shovel hands in the space to try and find out where it goes

has anybody ever seen this ???

it might not even be off the car, they were built in america in the 90's so it might have just been pushed in there to get rid of it.

failing that, can you see the other half of the sticky pad anywhere or a patch where it might have been

It belongs in the top of the roll hoop trim piece, it wraps around the tube you can see through the inspection hole, nothing to worry about. I guess it is some form of sound deadening as it has no other function.

Do you have an electric roof? If so have you checked the balljoint that connects the roof to the ram? This can sometimes be slack and rattle.

I had a similar problem after replacement.
It turned out that despite looking like it was....it was not exactly in place.
