Rear fog light

What has that got to do with vehicle testing MIke? As regards the M.O.T. test go on line and see for your self how low tech the test is. Most people, probably including yourself, don't realise the M.O.T. is looking for the lowest passable level of compliance only. That's a scary thought.. A tester can pass a tyre ON the limit at 1.6mm but would you want to drive on it? I wouldn't, but all a tester can do is advise that it is on the limit. Most people will say " Oh well it's passed", p!$$ off and for get about it till they slide off the road. That's is what I like about this forum, owners want to keep their cars well above a minimum standard.
In the motor trade you can't go running to a computer screen on every job that you are given to look up if a part needs greasing or not, you use your experience, in my case 41 years, so no I didn't know what TIS was.
Another point to ponder is on here we are all talking about one brand and mainly one model of car, just think about how many makes and models I have to know enough about before criticising.

What is TIS Brian/Rich please? I can appreciate excessive grease would attract dust etc which is why I use silicone grease ..... it doesn't
Why would you think calliper suppliers give you a sachet of grease to use if it was a bad idea?

As HT as stated is an electronic workshop manual that covers a multitude of BMWs, I though it was maybe worth mentioning the greasing of the pins (or not) as it seems counter intuitive not to put grease on something you normally would. As for grease coming with the calipers, I assumed this was for putting on the brake pads.

I "bought" a replacement switch from a BMW breakers near Eton (a bit of a contrast from the school!!!) Luckily I took the old switch with me and their replacement didn't have the 4 internal springs and so was never going to work !!! The poor guy was highly embarrassed and let me have the switch for nowt. I managed to cannibalise the 2 and the end result was the switch now functions well.
Secondly I took the offending caliper off this morning and used a G clamp to push the piston further inside. I'd already teased the dust seal up gently and dribbled brake fluid on the piston. After doing this a few times the piston moved more freely than before.
Put everything back and arranged a re-test this afternoon.
THE CAR PASSED THE MOT
I'm absolutely chuffed. Been working on the car since March. Do I have the record for taking the longest time to finish a Z3 project ????????
 
Way to go Barry!! It's been quite a ride trying to get your car to pass the MOT but you stuck it out! Congrats, JIM

No doubt this will be the end of project Phase 1 - get it on the road. Now starts Phase 2 which is the endless tinkering :D

Well done though, just goes to show with enough patience (and time) you can achieve anything!

It is the high intensity rear lights. There are two push switches below the light switch one for the front fog lamps and the other for the reads. To be used when visibility is poor so that the car can be seen from further away in poor conditions. In fog at night they do produce a lot of glare when following close behind so do make you keep your distance. Must be why lorry drivers hate them as they can't tailgate you.
 
I have seen the two switches but did not know what the set up was! I thought you could turn on the left or the right fog lights individually - someone took my fogs out so I could never test. Thanks! :)
 
Just tested the rear fog lights, WOW works really well, I might start using that to keep the tailgaters off my rear end.

If you turn them on coming up to a junction before you brake the tailgaters disappear in a cloud of tyre smoke.
