Any suggested suppliers Lee?

There's a few brands around but all are north of £100+ one good one is Mishimoto. I didn't really want to spend anymore than £50 seeing as its only a can with a baffle and gauze filter. I went for a unbranded unit off ebay for £40 the internals your after look like this you also want a sealed unit with no vent, it's the increased case pressure that stops the oil usage.

@Lee looks like it's worth doing on any engine regardless of age. Would be great to see a how-to with pics when you fit it, and a follow up of oil caught. Will you be cleaning the intake valves when you install it?

I'll keep this thread updated with the how to, It's very simple so wont take long.

You wont need to clean the intake valves because of the way our engines are designed, the injectors spray directly onto the back of the valves so they should be clean already.
 
Right, the last couple of weeks have been Rnd focused in the shed. None of us have ever fitted a catch can and it's safe to say we have learnt alot about how the CCV system works and it's impact on the engine running.

First job we did was remove the CCV system in its entirety and fitted a rubber bung on the dip stick tube.

To make things easier we reused the original fittings, if you gently cut the plastic tube it reveals a nice barb fitting.

This next image shows the CCV system totally removed, the two red circles are the reused fittings and the line at the bottom is the blanked off dip stick tube. The two fittings at the top is where the catch can sits. So you have gases and oil vapor leaving the rocker cover going through the catch can and the left of vapor entering the inlet manifold to be reburnt... in theory.

This was where the fun begun, the Mk1 catch can setup so to speak had all 3/4" (19mm) pipe this included the connection to the catch can. Also we fitted a non return PCV next to the inlet manifold. I've heard some stories of the sump being emptied back via the ccv system.

The large size pipe makes you stand back and go that looks really odd... and once we started the car it barely wanted to run, you could hear a really loud wooshing noise! it was sucking too much un-metered air in via the manifold. When I squeezed the pipe the engine began to run normally. This lead the re design and dropping everything down to 3/8.

It ran better with the smaller pipe but still not great. I connected Carly and looked at the fuel trims, they were round 10% when they should be below 5% so I was still getting too much air. I fitted another restriction in the Manifold line with a 3mm hole and everything dropped into acceptable figures.

The big question Does it work...... are you using less oil. In short yes it does work but theirs a trade off. Where you've increased the vacuum in the case the rings are pulling harder in the bores in tern creating a more "Laggy / delayed" throttle response. The M54 has never been the most responsive flyby wire setup but it was really bad now. I'm also using less oil and the guys report seeing less puffs of blue smoke.

The long an short of it. The piston rings 'oil scrapper ring' need to be replaced so this will be my next venture. I'll pull the engine out in the near future and replace/gap/hone and give the engine a new lease of life. This is the risk you run buying a second hand engine in a hurry.

Also I've managed to find a 3.0 being broken nearby, finally got my hands on the OEM airbox.

Long & interesting read, lots of dedication to you guys. I'm guessing then, swopping a 2.0 N52TU for a 2.8 1998/2000 "should" be pretty straight forward?

Hi Kev if your talking about the M52 they are all very similar, It wouldn't take too much fuss to swap at all.
 
Another little zed update. I removed all the custom CCV lines and went back to an OEM setup. For the eagle eyed of you the only difference is the position of the dipstick this is where it sits on a 3-series, they sit further back normally, this is due to the sump being smaller on the 3-series and the dipstick is at another angle.

Was also a good time to run through some engine flush and some fresh oil. This really needed doing as this engine is running half the bits from my old M52TU, safe to say the oil filter was doing its job and was full of bits.

I've also made some mirror blanks so I can fit carbon mirrors, these are sided and designed to line up with the existing holes. These are laser cut from 5mm stainless, PM me if anyone wants more details.

The snagging list is now very small, but the problem annoying me the most is the oil usage so tomorrow I've booked it in for 'Flexfuel' treatment. I've had this treatment done to a few of my cars with great results, the plan is to free off the rings and at least reduce the oil usage and give me back my robbed bhp. The 1st hour they run the engine at idle injecting hydrogen/oxygen into the air intake, the second hour is at 3k. I'm looking forward to seeing if this actually works or the heads coming off for a rebuild.

All that aside she looks pretty!

How much oil is it actually using.

If I go for an enthusiastic drive say 100 miles I can do a Litre of oil :D I tend to get big blue clouds booting off the line. Normal driving its fine.

Now I understand, mine uses a bit of oil, I usually have to put about a litre in after a Euro trip but nothing like that. I don't drive as enthusiastically as you but give it a bit of stick sometimes. I have never seen bue smoke.
 
What causes this? I've had it a few times when I put my foot down in 2nd and 3rd.

The main cause seems to be ring blow by. Gummed you rings seem to be common on the M54 engines by poor design. I’ve an engine flush and a few bottles of redex, has made a big change but still not there yet.

Sorry mate forgot you have a 2.8, for you most likely the CCV diaphragm.

Yeah, had a feeling it’s something to do with that got a small split in the hose across the top of the manifold. Got a new system for it to go in soon.

Now come on Mike don't tell porkies. I've followed you around various European countries and everytime you pull off your like a dog out a trap lol! =))
