the Sunbeam Alpine was always seen as a hairdresser's car
Give over, in the day of the Alpine, there were barbers, not hairdressers.:)

Tony.

ps. Shame they dissolved over time.

A 1.9 Z3 is 50kg lighter than an NA MX5/Eunos, seriously?

Tony.
Mazda MX5 have that system first developed by Lancia, where they shed weight as they go along.

I chose a late Z3 over an early Z4 (roadsters, both) because I didn't want to drive a car with a rear end that looks like a chicken's arse that has just been kicked!

Z4 Coupés are beautiful, but the roadster is not IMHO. What the value of my Z3 2.2 is doen't bother me as I've had it for nine years and shall probably have it for another nine at least. My son had an S2000 as a daily driver and whilst I agree that it is very fast and handles well, it is crude, harsh and noisy compared with the far more civilised Z3 6-cylinder. The Honda was also a rust bucket despite being a year newer than my Z3. Drive shaft noises from worn CVJs and loose hubs, plus timing chain tensioner problems didn't exactly enamour me to a car I had lusted after until he bought his. His Z4M Coupé on the other hand... :wacky:

I've got 4 on the drive
2.8 110k miles paid £750
2.8 auto 140k paid £750
2.2 100k paid £1350
2.8 52k paid £1600

There is a nice 2.8 on the forum asking for £8k. To put it into perspective, I paid £5.5k for a 2005 mercedes SL350 with 52k on the clock nearly 3 years ago.
I don't mean to p*** anyone off but owners clubs can be a bit blinkered.

What a testament to the diversity of opinion amongst us all. Over the years I have had the pleasure of buying many different types of vehicle and as a general rule the old saying that you get what you pay for rings very true. There are plenty of old knackers out there for very little money but be prepared to put plenty of time and effort in to finding decent parts and fitting them. At the other end there are quite a few dreamers asking crazy high prices for low mileage garage queens that may or may not appreciate in value. Somewhere in the middle is where the right car at the right price waits for the right buyer. The Z3 certainly divides opinion but I have never yet heard anyone call it ugly before.

2.8 52k £1600, What's the catch? 10 owners, no history, rust bucket non runner or did the seller not have a clue, that's an outrageous price c'mon.

Interesting comments by motco on the Honda S2000. In my experience I'd say that Japanese cars often have some very smart engineering. They are generally screwed together properly, but they are also very much built to a cost and that can lead to unwelcome surprises. Years ago a friend bought a new Nissan Micra. She drove it carefully, looked after it and had it serviced on the dot at the supplying dealer. After about 3 years the underbonnet looked dreadful. All the alloy parts were covered in white rust and the steel parts with minimal factory rust protection were covered in red rust. However, I always felt that internally the mechanicals would tick on till the end of time....

I remember as a schoolboy thinking how did Ford manage to make such a beautiful mk2 Capri from the chassis of the mk1, I drooled over it. I now think the mk2 looks slab sided and tinny compared with the classic lines of the mk1.
Is this 'the ghost of father Christmas' for z3 & z4's?

I think the Z3 just has something that a Z4 doesn't,

Unrelated to the build quality, I found my friends’s S2000 spectacularly terrible to drive around anything but a racetrack. The combination of a high-strung engine that needs high revs to move smartly, and so little torque down low that it was easy to be embarrassed from stoplight to stoplight by Mom’s Subaru wagon. Overall a terrible road car tuning.

When I first saw the Z3, I thought that it took a lot of styling cues from the late 1930s 328 - particularly the perforated disc wheels on cars in the early promo pictures. To me that gave it a link to BMW's heritage. By the time the Z4 came along Chris Bangle was head of styling.....

That was exactly my situation when I bought mine.

I feel the Z3 has a timeless elegance that a Z4 lacks. But I also feel Z4s will be appreciated more with the passage of time, in a way to how Z3s are possibly viewed now:thumbsup:

Well owning both for the time being, I still feel the Z3 has the points on beauty, how anyone can describe them as ugly defeats me (OK beauty is in the eye of the beholder) but to me the Z4 has the best arse in the business and the view from the door mirrors along the rear flanks is superb.
So yes i will be keeping the Z4 and somehow will be parting with the Z3, Although i have come to 1 decision, if circumstances allow would always choose the Z4 for cruises and holidays but would keep the Z3 for the many shows i attend as it always seems to pull in the crowds the Z4 never does.

Those "ugly" cars are so ugly you just have to love them.:)
