It could do that if you ease off the throttle and then back on it. You can normally pinpoint Diff. backlash by driving in a low gear and keep pressing and releasing the throttle sharply. You'll hear the "clunk" of the driving taking up the slack.

I have *that*... only at low speed, and only if I release the accelerator sharply or JUST when I apply power in first. If I drive 'smooth' it doesn't clonk. I'm used to it, but as the OP was saying, it's the only thing that isn't 'smooth' on my z3 driving.
Is there a fix?

Sounds like you need to do what Lee did on his car, adjust the backlash from the diff.
