As you might already know, Philadelphia means 'the city of brotherly love'. Although recently, you would never know it. It's the city where I grew up. Tonight on the evening news, they said that in this past month, 728 people were shot. That's 28 people per day. Can you imagine what would have happened if it WASN'T the city of brotherly love???? ( 96 of those were children under the age of 18). ....................Frankie

So,so sad Frankie.

Tony.

They need to close the infamous Gun Show Loophole to start with which allows someone to buy a gun with no checks whatsoever.

Well, jeez, if those kids had an AK 47 or a B A R they could have protected themselves. 🤬😭 I know that's a bit sick, but the NRA jerks might just agree.
Our much misunderstood 2nd amendment should and MUST BE AMENDED to put a stop to the madness.

Now I used to feel safe in Philly, some years ago mind. Stayed with a professor and his wife in Sicklerville just down from Camden County college where we both were. Used to catch the train from Lindenwold into Philly over Ben Franklin bridge. Got a view of Camden itself just over the Delaware river - now that's a place you don't want to be !!
Must go back. Did road trips down to Atlantic City and Toronto passing through Pennsylvania and Amish country.
Yeah, we used to call Camden the 'Murder Capitol of the World". The people who have all the wonder cures for the city say they've done some reforms with the police and not everything is much better. The police I talk to say they don't bother to report everything that's going on anymore and the record is a false positive......................Frankie

I still take the Lindenwold into Philly to 9th and Locust to go to Wills Eye Hospital for my check up. Camden really looks like the perfect example of a ghetto when you're passing it. Glad I don't have to get off there.

Wow, just wow mate  That's a statistic that nobody wants.

Absolutely shocking figures, I cannot understand how guns, in particular automatic and semi automatic rifles are sold to any Tom Dick and Harry in the states. What are they going to need them for? They are not going to war (or are they with latest election war mongering), that's what they have the Armed Forces for.
Then you get the NRA saying - it's OK to bare arms - it's in the 2nd amendment. Its really should be changed like the outdated voting system. Just my opinion.

Never thought I'd see Philadelphia talked about on this site. Interesting! I grew up an hour north in the suburbs. Went to school at Temple in North Philly. Then preceded to live there for ten years, age 20-30. Fishtown, Queen Village, Rittenhouse, Manayunk and I think that's it. It's a cool place to hang out when your 22, but if you've got any sort of sense of wonder, your mind can turn into an absolute hell hole if you spend too much time there. Several friends of mine got held on the ground at gunpoint in their apartments. I got mugged for $5 once outside the Barbary in Fishtown by some dude with a stupid Glock and no idea how to use it. Now that I'm on the other side of the USA, I can safely say the one thing I miss about Philadelphia is that it has some of the best running and walking trails and historical neighborhoods in the country. I miss the nice neighborhoods of that city a lot. They're up there with Manhattan and Boston. If you want to understand the "728" number, take your Z for a ride north on Broad street past Temple for day. Keep the top and the revs up!

Interested to hear how European cities compare to US cities in terms of this gun violence, drug abuse stuff. Been to most in the US with the exception of LA and Vegas and man do they all blend together after a while...

What suburbs did you live? I used to live in northeast Philly near the airport on Grant Ave..............Frankie

Closest I got to Broad Street was the view from top of City Hall and a visit to the Convention Centre off Arch Street for the flower show. Furthest northwest I ventured was Ben Franklin Parkway for the obligatory museum visit, library and Boat House Row around the back.
Likewise I stayed in Manhatten and again felt safe, the city mayor had at that time made radical improvements to the city, walking around central park gave no bad vibes or experiences but guess you wouldn't venture there at night. Good police presence.
I got a good experience of general real life in townships away from the touristy side of things by staying with residents. Pretty much what you would expect/hope for.
I used to like boathouse row. I rowed for La Salle and we rowed out of Fairmount boat house. ..........college days............hmmmm.....Frankie

Hi @hellrot96, you asked how numbers over here compare. The total number of all homicides in the UK (England,Northern Ireland,Scotland and Wales) in the whole of 2019 was 650. Of course these were not all shootings which are relatively rare.

Wow, @Z Victor 1, thanks for those numbers. Interesting to hear.

Hey @FRANKIE, I lived in in the town of East Greenville. It was basically on the edge of Montgomery county. I guess Philly suburbs is a stretch for my town. But we always used to say we were at the end of the Philly suburbs. Over the hill and you enter Emmaus and the Allentown suburbs.

My Mom was from Allentown and my cousin lives in Emmaus................Frankie

I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia (Plymouth Meeting). Used to ride a bike into the city at 14 year’s old. Worked for Acme
Markets and Mrs Paul’s in the city for years. Can’t say I miss the city or the crime.
