So, some NOT so nice news. The power steering is knackered. It's stiff as hell. First diagnosis is the pump. So it got replaced with a refurbed pump and a BMW belt. no change. Now the reservoir filter is clogged up, I hear... and the assumption is this is the culprit.
I have one on order, so hoping and praying this will be it. BUTTTT I have this scary thought that it might be the power steering rack :( Could a clogged up reservoir can cause so much havoc with the steering? Please advice

Clogged filter is a likely culprit as it stops oil flowing to the pump freely.

An update. Yesterday they tested the PAS and it worked intermittently, smooth one minute and glitchy and hard the next .. they reckon the reservoir not pumping enough oil to the pump causing the intermittent glitch.. any thoughts please?just to add, this was with the old reservoir…..

Old res and old filter? Filter is suspect.

Ok more bad news. The reservoir went in today but the problem is still present. Assume the PAS rack failing - so bought one from @Andyboy . Delivery early next week. ☹

They found metal shavings (!!!) inside the filter?? But where could this have come from?

Well, there's only the pump and the rack that moves in the system, so must be one of them.

Ok, thanks! The pump is new - like one-day new, so it's got to be the rack.. :( bought a rack off @Andyboy .. going in next week.

With the rack out, check the UJ's on the steering coupling as well. A rusty seizing UJ can give similar symptoms.
