This is the tool I used to hold the crankshaft pulley to allow the bolt to be slackened
Now that is a good question the one I used is part of our timing kits but that is a 4 drawer roll cab and I would imagine whole lot costs a bit .Where can you get one of those ?
Is it possible they just need a thread tap running into them Malc ? They'll have 20 years of corrosion in them after all.Stripped down the front end to get to the crankshaft pulley and can see the 3 slots but there and also three threaded holes M8 I thought, but std M8 bolt doesn’t screw in ? Any one know what the thread is?
Thanks for that... that is the sort of tool I need but mine only has 3 cut outs on the pulley.Special tool for E46 here at a price https://www.lasertools.co.uk/product/7422

Tony.
Glad it worked for you .I locked my crank with a 1/4 inch bahco extension bar rammed in the timing hole added a 4ft long scaffold bar with impact socket on the end of the crank, i never thought it would come off but eventually did... and not a mark on the extension bar.... come to think of it...it may have been a 1/4 drill bit or soemthing similar size stuffed in the timing hole in the bell housing bt the starter ring gear... worked for me...
