This is the tool I used to hold the crankshaft pulley to allow the bolt to be slackened

Stripped down the front end to get to the crankshaft pulley and can see the 3 slots but there and also three threaded holes M8 I thought, but std M8 bolt doesn’t screw in ? Any one know what the thread is?

Is it possible they just need a thread tap running into them Malc ? They'll have 20 years of corrosion in them after all.

That’s possible.....didn’t want to run a tap in case I damaged the thread. But may try very gently tomorrow

I bloody hate people that are always right.....=))=))=))

Exactly what you said, cleaned them out with standard M8 x 1.25 tap and some wd40, and the bolts screwed straight in.
Now just to figure out whether to make a tool that uses them or the three slots to hold the pulley still.
I assume that once the middle nut is undone the pulley will slide off without any bother at all:banghead:

Usually a pulley will slide off easily mate, but just to prove me wrong sometimes you have to use a persuader. Be careful to watch for the key which locks the pulley to the crank. They can fall out of place on some engines.

If its tight, I will use a three leg puller and copious amounts of releasing fluid

I locked my crank with a 1/4 inch bahco extension bar rammed in the timing hole added a 4ft long scaffold bar with impact socket on the end of the crank, i never thought it would come off but eventually did... and not a mark on the extension bar.... come to think of it...it may have been a 1/4 drill bit or soemthing similar size stuffed in the timing hole in the bell housing bt the starter ring gear... worked for me...

helps to get the spark plugs out to when you want to find the tdc hole in flywheel as you not fighitng compression of the motor... worked for me on my m44 not sure whether a m42 has the same hole in flywheel i would have thought it did

Glad it worked for you .
But I've got to say personally I wouldn't risk that .
It is a huge transferred load you are applying to the pin which is only into the flywheel by 15-20mm at best a whole host of things could go wrong 1st thing that springs to mind would be snapped pin in the flywheel as the crankshaft bolt is really tight.
The correct type of hold tool as pictured above is the length of a breaker bar still took 2 people to safety slacken the pulley bolt ( one holding tool and other with breaker bar on bolt)
Sorry but I don't want others to think it's a safe way because in my opinion it's not.
Stephen.

I have to agree with Steve on this because it is after all just a timing pin location. I wouldn't have risked it on the old diesel Transit and that pin was about 17mm dia.
