The wires are secured with some tape behind the headlamp, the second picture shows you the actual connector with the dust cap on, after its been released and the tape peeled off.

I found a connector like in the photo with a dust cap on behind the drivers side headlamp.
This one in the photo, is this what it looks like?

Evening all, i've just finished retrofitting an OBC to my 2002 Z3.
Stalk works, all of the features work, except 1. I bought a second hand temperature sensor and i don't know if it's working.
The OBC beeps on start up and says -40.0'C but i'm not sure what is the route cause fault?
Sensor or does it need coding? Maybe i plugged the sensor into the wrong connector? Suggestions?

Is there anyway to test the air temperature sensor?
Which colour cables is the sensor meant to be plugged into?

I’ll double check the cables and worst case leave it to settle. If it doesn’t work, new ‘probe’

Evening. What year is yours? I’m thinking that the facelift version uses a different sensor? It still doesn’t work on mine
Mine is Oct 97, and this is the sensor on mine.

Tried the exact same sensor on mine. Didn’t work. And I’ve check the cable and sensor. Both carrying current. Might try the E46 sensor before buying another E36 one.
Thoughts on that decision?
Worth a try. Pm any members with a 2.2, I know @pgunter has one.

@g8jka its working like a dream now. Like my last post there is 2 sensor types and 2 sensor connectors in the same place in my engine. Depending on which version is yours, will depict which sensor and connector you need to use

It was originally working with the yellow connector in mine (also facelift) but I put the sensor back on my old car when I sold it and fitted ///M gauges. Now I’m putting an OBC back in but can’t get the sensor to work, I think it’s a wiring issue though as the old gauge is still connected. I have 2 plugs, 1 yellow and 1 black which are exactly the same connections for the original sensor. I bought one of the later sensors hoping to splice and fit to the original wiring as I don’t have the black plug you have to connect into. But it maybe connected somewhere down behind the bumper. I’ll have another route around and take the wiring out from the ///M temp gauge it maybe causing the issue.

Found something new at the weekend on the facelift for the external sensor. It’s fitted to the lower grill in the top corner. See picture for mounting position. Just clicked into place.

obc computer fitted, temp prob fitted, and initially read 40 degrees c then quickly flashed to 25 degrees c so that all works...

Just started to remove the steering wheel and upper lower cowlings then pulled the indicator switch out only to realise my battery is disconnected and i am parked too close to a wall to enable me to get the screws out of the plastic trim piece by the door hinge so all back together again move the car so i can get to that screw above the door hinge.... is the wiring easy to get too once that panel under the steering wheel is off... not the cowlings but the panel underneath i didnt realise this was such a big job...
