I bought my z3 in February 2015 off eBay very cheap £(1350) as the owner had lost the mot certificate and the car had been sitting around for nearly a year but then found I had been very lucky and had actually bought a real low mileage rust free gem with a full bmw history (expect for the mots) and when I checked the mot history online it passed with flying colours and still had 8 months on it and had only done 70 miles since the last one.
I replaced the hood this year as the rear screen had seen better days (£320) and bought a new exhaust back box and have given her a full service and changed the diff and gearbox oil since owning her and had a bit of paintwork done on the corner of the front bumper and took out the lovely kenwood mask stereo and fitted a nice blaupunkt iPod unit which doesn't look out of place plus I've replaced a drivers mirror and repainted the mirror bases so the car now looks brand new again..
On driving her home I found I had a swimming pool in the boot but after draining the water out I was lucky and found the boot floor was totally rust free and a new brake light seal fixed the problem so now it's water tight again.
I don't use her much as a daily driver as I've an equally as nice BMW e36 compact for that but this winter I will get her out the garage as I want to change the seat base rubbers as there's some play in them and next summer I will be using the Zed as a daily car if I'm not to scared to put a scratch on it.
I've tried all the competition before buying the Z3 as I had a smart roadster (badly screwed together and made of tic tac boxes and my ex had a newish MX5 late mk 2.5 which I couldn't fault to be honest but wouldn't buy one due to rust issues and it just doesn't look as good as a Z3 but when I was looking at the Z3 years ago nice low mileage examples were way out of my budget but I've finally got my dream car.
