Hi all, newbie on here and newbie to Z3. I’ve purchased my first 2002 Z3 1.9i and looks like I’ve ran into a common problem… oily engine. Took it to the garage for a service and mechanic noticed engine was covered in a lot of oil, but couldn’t identify the leak due to the amount of oil covering engine. After my initial research I suspected it would be the oil filter housing but after seeing the following pictures there seems to be multiple possibilities, including timing case. Pictures included, any help or advice is much appreciated.

Realistically the thing to do is to give it all a good clean down, run it stationary to start with and observe and keep checking.
Don't know on M43, but on the M44 the usual suspects are oil filter housing gasket and rocker cover gasket, but other leak sites are available.

Unless there is oil actually dripping off it, a proper clean is what you need to do. Then start watching for leaks. 1st.culprit will be the oil filter housing (an issue common to nearly all BMW engines at some point). But it spreads far and wide being at the front of the engine.
