Afternoon all.

New to the forum but have been watching from afar for a couple of months now after purchasing a 2002 BMW Z3 Estoril blue 2.2 sport - you'll know it well as it was a previous forum members car SK02 FLY.

Its a bit of a convoluted story how I ended up buying but here were are with it…. thanks to my friend Barry who recently purchased a similar car and well I thought I'd dip my toe in the water so to speak too!

We have spent the last 6 weeks since purchasing the car addressing many an issue, in no particular order to date we have undertaken:
  • Full inspection 1 & 2 service including water pump, thermostat, filters, fluids and belts change.
  • Replaced crank sensors.
  • Full overhaul of the braking system including new discs and pads all round. Replaced ABS sensors.
  • New H & R lowering springs all round on Bilstein B12 sport shocks (b8's on front and b6's on rear). Mounts refurbished and bolts / gaskets replaced.
  • Refurbished the 17" wheels with new boots on all corners, we even replaced / refurbished all the wheel bolts and removed locking wheel nuts as the car came without the locking nut - handy!
  • Interior refurbishment including seats and steering wheel refurb, replaced gear knob with correct sport version, full cleaned, addressed issues with missing trim, clips and such like. Installed wind deflector c/w correct clips and fixings. Installed DAB / Bluetooth stereo, addressed issues with door seals (replaced) fully steam cleaned interior and new mats ordered….
  • Removed the horrible chrome side vents and door handle trims and replaced vents with Estoril blue versions and cleaned up original door handles upon removing chrome trim.
  • Refitted convertible hood properly as it hadn't been correctly refitted following a hard top removal, replaced missing trims, bolts and such like.
  • Dechromed bonnet vents - gloss black, not sure I like as yet but we will see!
  • New number plates.
  • New BMW badges all round.
  • Removed spare wheel frame / casing / spare wheel - as in my opinion it looks naff from behind. Plugged holes in boot floor with cut up spare wheel frame fixings.
Works planned / in progress:
  • Rust rectification - the sill design manufactured by BMW is to be honest rubbish. Offside completely stripped back to bare metal, all rust removed (all wheel arch liners removed, jack points and deflector trims removed), prepared and treated to waxy oils finest primer, stone chip and underseal. Outer sill long past saving so replacements being sourced via BMW as to find good used versions is like finding a needle in a haystack….
  • Rust rectification cont'd - nearside to be completed as above.
  • Polybushing all round - on order, will end up being a winter project I think.
  • Convertible roof replacement - work in progress as a potential replacement may have been found, will be replacing the roof seals as they have been gummed up with silicon!
  • Full tracking and alignment.
  • Cloudy headlight refurbishment - I've bought the refurbishment kit, just need to get round to doing it.
  • Re MOT
  • Dent and ding removal - local dent removal specialist lined up for early next week, I stopped counting at ten dents….
  • Fully repaint car - winter 2016 / spring 2017.
  • Stainless steel exhaust / forced induction kit - tbc when.
  • Strut braces upper (front) and upper / lower (rear).

Good to hear you know what you're doing Craig.
I was the Sunday morning viewer who didn't end up going to see the car after various calls with the owner as I just thought something wasn't right.
Ended up with a black 2.8 pre facelift the day after from Hawick.
Mine also needed a bit of sill end work, which I have done albeit temporarily its not very noticeable.
Hope all turns out well and look forward to seeing pics of the car when finished.

We got the car cheap enough so a bit of work had to be expected - perhaps not to the level that I've taken it but I'm a bit ocd when it comes to cars... I'm not sure I know what I'm doing more stumbling along and dealing with things one at a time. My friend Barry has been a big help to date however... Although his chat is crap.

Hello Craig, welcome from Truro. Most Zeds are a labour of love so once you've got her sorted you'll forget the bad experiences

Wow! Welcome Craig, that's some list. Getting harder to find a Z3 in decent condition but it doesn't help when sellers are less than accurate in describing them. I've looked at some real howlers described as mint condition, cars in "drive away" condition with the engine management lights on... Good to see another one being saved

Part of the fun for me is the restoration of the car, it's never going to be my daily driver and well if I get it to where I want it to be and enjoy it for a couple of years then great... Then it's on to something else as a weekend toy / project.

The person I purchased the car from hadn't had it long so if anything the issues all existed before he bought it but we are where we are and we'll get it sorted and enjoy... Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say!

Temporarily put wheels etc on to see how it looked before dismantling to address rust.

John 767 was the seller - think he only joined to try & sell.
The for sale advert can still be seen by searching.

Determined to get the car out before the winter comes for a drive... So I've got my work cut out for me!
