Re possible suspension damage. It's actually good news that if it wasn't sitting straight the RHR wheel is buckled. That will mean that the wheel took most of the the impact and not the suspension. It's much easier to change a wheel that replace / straighten a rear beam (or worse).

Thanks for that…… That’s what I hoped for when I bought it.

The second new rear rim arrived and has been fitted. At first glance, the right rear looks to have different camber to the left, but that seems to be an optical effect from the damage to the bumper. We’ve measured both wheels and checked alignment manually as best we can (cue amateur use of spirit level) and they seem at worst a couple of mm different. Driving it up and down the yard, it seems to roll true and at low speed feels fine. The only way to be sure is get her on a jig and tested (unless someone has another suggestion) which I may do at some point, depending upon how she drives. The next stage is to get her on the road but I am still waiting for the V5 from the DVLA, SIX weeks after sending off the form………! I rang them to chase on Friday but they have such a backlog with COVID that I just have to wait....

They did say that as a special concession because of COVID, I could tax her over the phone there and then, but doing that on the 27th August would have cost me an extra month that I wasnt going to use, as we are on holiday now until 9th September. Also, technically, I need a V5 to get plates made (although some back street guys won’t ask), so we are basically in a holding pattern.

Once I get her on the road, she’s going to a couple of body shop places locally to quote for the damage to the panels, and I’d like them to price me for removing the bumpers and sills, just to check for damage and also to clean up all the debris from whichever field she landed in....!

Have you checked the rear beam bushes as they can make alignment changes in camber. Interestingly when I removed my rear beam apart from knackered bushes one of my pins were bent which I possibly may have done on removal but might be worth a check.
Good shout! Will add to the list!

Re alignment - you can learn a lot by following the car down the road.

You can tell if it crabs and camber is pretty obvious.

Also, try a high speed deceleration test. Empty, straight dual carriageway, knock it into neutral and feel how she rolls and how it decelerates.

Cheers for that. Will try both!

It's alive!!!!

After waiting nearly two months, the V5 has finally turned up! So, I was able to get her taxed and get number plates done - they came in 36 hours from a bloke on eBay. I went for the liquid gel type just for a bit of difference. I'd already got an M Power number plate surround a few weeks ago, so we are now road legal! Whilst putting them on, I replaced the old rusty screws with new stainless steel ones too!

Only had chance to drive her once, with work commitments, so hoping to give a her a proper check on the road this weekend....

Hi everyone! Just joined as I’ve just acquired a new Z3 M Roadster. It’s a Category S crash damaged one that I’m gonna bring back to life!

She’s a 98 Estoril Blue S50 -
the reg is S850BWW - with 61k on the clock.

I’m hoping there’s not too much damage. Already replaced the alloy that was completely knackered with a genuine style 40 one from Germany, and had the engine ticking over without any problems. There some minor body work damage and the chassis doesn’t seem too badly damaged - all the body panels seem to fit well still and the roof is working fine and fitting properly! Hoping to get her on a lift this week to inspect the suspension underneath- fingers crossed.

I’d be interested if the previous owner is on here, as I’d like to find out as much as possible about the car’s history...!
