Quick hello

Just purchased a 1998 z3 2.8 manual in silver.

Long history, good body work , good roof but tiny bit of rust on the arches / sills.

Planned jobs

Rust , this is tiny atm. Could I get away with spraying something over it ?

Seats are sliding forward , new heated seats or bushes.

M50 intake to release some more power ?

Hardtop - would love one but due to cost this will be one the last things.

Floor matts , could do with new ones.

And obviously a service!

Ps from northern ireland

Spot weld failures are certainly a concern. I would get the sill outers off and check that the sill inners are still sound before spending out on getting the spot welds issue sorted. Costs could mount up if sill inners require major work as well.

Thanks

I found this post

https://zroadster.org/articles/bmw-z3-sill-removal-and-protection.67/

I presume i should follow this. My mechanic skills are limited, but i have 2 axels stands and a few tools so will hopefully be able to follow this.
Whats worst case scenario in terms of problem / cost ?

Thanks
C

Google "Randy Forbes BMW" and take a look at the videos and his site. I understand this is seen as the complete fix for the spot weld issue. I caught mine when one spot weld was showing a small crack and had the bracket seam welded to the cross member all round and then to the trunk floor. This is a much cheaper option, about 1 hour labour, than the RF kit but is only suitable if there is minimal damage.
New sills from BMW should be around £230 (remember to ask for 10% discount which you will usually get from the dealer). Add around £200 for painting and allow around £50 for rust treatment, box protection and panel protection products etc.
Hope that is of help.

thanks @roadvoyager1 really useful info in terms of the costs. Re the sills, is that 230 for both ?

I have the car garaged atm, so ill prob let it sit until i get someone to look at the welds, then see who can tackle the sills. ( If its too much for myself )

I just purchased 2 new sills from Sopers BMW in Lincoln for £230. That was with forum discount.

I did have to collect them, due to size.

Yes, £230 for both. If you get them painted (they come in black primer) removing and refitting the sills is not difficult. Allow a couple of days to complete due to drying time for rust treatments and protection.
