Been pretty busy recently. After a lot of heavy rain we got some hardcore down on the garage base and got it compacted down, it was a bit sloppy in places but it soon dried up nicely after a week or so of better weather.

We then got some more hardcore for the patio area and whacked this down so it was nice and solid. A lot of the soil I used to level it up was removed again as it was just too mushy so we filled this with harcore and it is now much better.

IMG_7991.JPG

The garage base was now ready for the concrete slab, we put a pipe in for the concrete to be poured around to allow the electrics to be buried in the ground upto it and then through the base into the garage. Also a layer of damp proof membrane was put down for the slap to be poured onto.

One of the few things we have never done and didn't fancy doing as it was a job that needed doing properly was pouring and smoothing out the concrete for the floor. So I had a few quotes for people to do it for me and in the end I ordered the concrete myself pre mixed and had a couple of guys do the labour. By the time we had bought wellies and hired tools to rake and level the base also it worked out cheaper to get someone to do it and it would save us trying to learn on such a big area.

They did a great job nice and level as well as smooth.

Between the edge of the drive and the garage will be gravelled to help with drainage and should leave a nice area to wash the cars. There is an inspection chamber which will sit too low so this has been raised up. I also put a new downpipe on the conservatory leading into a drain and pipe directly to the inspection chamber. Before the downpipe was just sunk into the mud, meaning the water just soaked into the ground which was useless. The spare offcut of drainage was used on the other side with some holes drilled in the top half for another soak away.

I got a new exhaust for the zed but I wasn't keen on the colour

A trench has been dug for the amoured cable which will supply electric to the garage. The cable will run alongside the soak away pipe that was already in place.

The shuttering has been removed, most of the edges packed up ready for some gravel to go around and the base has had 3 coats of sealant.

@gookah didn't do a bad job cementing in the new height of the chamber.

Looking good Dave, and you've got some other jobs done into the bargain.

Yeah costing me more money :banghead: At least it is getting done properly whilst it's a mess, will save making more mess in the future. Started painting some fences as well, just waiting for 8 new ones to replace some rotten ones.

Yep, sheds and fences under the spotlight here at the Shed too mate. Last Tuesday our plastic heating oil tank sprang a leak. Got a guy to bring a tank and pump the oil out the next day. More expense.:(

Just as well you found it or it may have leeched into the field next door, and then you may have ended up with an oil exploration rig Fracking, thinking they’d found an oil field:whistle:

When I contacted the company who came and emptied the old tank they gave me a tip to seal the leak so we didn't lose more oil than necessary over the intervening hours.

Looking great @g8jka Can’t wait for the next instalment! How long has the garage base taken you to do? Did you hire the ground compressor/flattened?

A couple of days to dig out for the base, put the shuttering down and compact it. Then a couple of hours for them to put the concrete in and level it out. We had to hire a mini digger for the day as it was too much to do by hand and we managed to borrow the whacker.

More updates...

The next job I did was to tidy up the edge of the tarmac driveway that I'd cut back so to neaten it up and add some strength to it so it doesn't crumble away when driving over it, I added some paving blocks across the entire length. I've not done anything like this before so gave it a go. Blocks were cemented in and the edges cemented to keep them in place. The gravel will start where the blocks end. I was quite pleased for a first attempt. They just need a good clean.

IMG_8052.JPG

IMG_8051.JPG

The sleepers arrived and I got these bedded in to section off the area which we will turf and one to seperate the drive area from the patio.

IMG_8050.JPG

I still hadn't heard anything about the delivery of timber ready for the garage, so we got on with the patio instead. After laying a few slabs, it was too much hard work mixing the cement for the base by hand. So we managed to borrow a cement mixer which made mixing much faster and easier. I was making trips on a daily basis to the local Wickes for sharp sand and cement :banghead: It would have been easier to get a loose tip delivered but I wasn't that organised.

IMG_8083.JPG

We got all these down by Thursday and finished pointing them yesterday. Just the area at the back between the sleepers and the garage but I can't get the slabs for these until the end of the month.

IMG_8113.JPG

All the timber finally arrived after a 3 week wait on Wednesday. There was quite a lot

IMG_8085.JPG

We started building Thursday afternoon.

IMG_8092.JPG

Thursday afternoon finished like this. One back side panel frame and cladded, plus the opposite frame made.

IMG_8091.JPG

Friday allowed us to make the rear frame and get the back side panel plus rear panel in position and screwed together.

IMG_8098.JPG

The other rear side panel was then put in position and screwed together.

IMG_8100.JPG

Then we started cladding both these sections and finished one front side frame and got this in position.

IMG_8104.JPG

IMG_8105.JPG

IMG_8106.JPG

A damp proof membrane has been added to the bottom of each frame.

IMG_8097.JPG

All braced together and ready a few hours work in the rain on Saturday afternoon. I started to clad the front side frame and made the opposite frame whilst @gookah got on with making the roof beams and apex which are the hardest part of the build.

IMG_8111.JPG

We had some issues with the cladding on the front side as it's slightly thicker in height so needs some work to get it all lined up along each panel. But nothing major that can't be sorted.

Today I cladded the remaining front side panel and got it all lined up nicely. I started to line up the back with the right hand side and I'll work my way down the fence side tomorrow to get it all square.

IMG_8117.JPG

IMG_8120.JPG

One full side and the other side rear have been bolted into the slab, the rear will be done tomorrow and then there are 5 more to go in and it will be solid.

Just the small front frames that will sit either side of the door to make and clad now, along with the remaining roof beams and apex, then the top part to clad front and rear once the roof beams are in place. The roof panels won't be here until the end of the month and the door probably in about 4 weeks time.

Great job Dave, you and the Director should be pleased and proud of that. I noticed his chair in one picture. Hope you didn't leave him in the corner as you built.;)

quite pleased with this, as the only thing I have built before was a bird box.
and David's only previous construction experience was with Lego

Autocad though is great, for designing the rafters and providing the measurements.

Now I have just got to let the handsaw know about them, as that seems to want to use its own :bashhead:

You're doing a grand job mate . I've been labouring for our Gary, but, he is replacing double glazed units at home. And we had to feed him !!
