On a wide body the wheels Are tucked under quite a way, which is why so many people use spacers

The gelcoat is actually grey (RAL-7015).

Although i'm sure the gelcoat can't be exact. Chris's phone gave it a blue tinge.

Although I'm quite liking that colour in the picture. Wonder if I should paint it like that. Although I have got grey car in my mind with red soft top and hints of red in the cabin. No hurry.

@Dxbolton On the picture I posted you can clearly see the light coloured lines around the headlights and along the top of the wings. This, I imagine, is where panels have been bonded. So wouldn't that lighter colour go all the way through? Only curious because you said you'd rubbed your down and that lines goes away?

No problem once it's painted but I wanted to delay paint for a while while I decide what colour to paint it.

The lighter lines are the mould joins and stick upwards. When you file them down it blends into the original colour as below

When the moulds are bolted together the gel coat sinks into the crevices so it should all be the same colour. Underneath you still have 1mm or thereabouts of the gel coat over the whole body
Silver with red roof will look great, similar to what I think Piran is doing.

How heavy is the back axle, the whole thing trailing arms, beam and diff? Just wondering what kind of bench I need to roll under the back of the car to drop the back end on to.

Only just spotted this thread as its not in the rebody section. I'm not sure which engine is the M44 but for a rebody you really need a 6 pot engine, ideally a 2.8 or 3.0 as this is what most buyers want. There have been quite a few 4 pot Cobra Tributes on eBay over the last few years and they seem to be very hard to sell, often a decently finished and painted car if it is a 4 pot will be lucky to recoup the kit price, worth bearing in mind.
I agreed to build a 250 California for my son as a combined 21st/graduation present but it was impossible to get insurance for a 2.8 so we opted for a 2.2 We got a quote for the insurance which was £`1k, however as a rebody (with a higher value) the insurance came town to a fraction under £800. This was a standard insurance policy with no mileage limitations from Adrian Flux.
I was pleasantly surprised with the 2.2 performance, not quite a s peppy as the 2.8 but it's no slouch and for my son fits the bill and hopefully the smaller engine won't hit the resale value when it is finally sold.may I suggest you start a new build thread in the rebody section so numpty's like me don't miss it!

There was a nice blue Cobra for sale on eBay about a year ago, nicely finished but it was a cat D and a 1.8 so was very hard to sell. I was interested in it as I could have pulled the kit and doors off and fitted it to a 6 pot for my daughter. Problem was that it hadn't been built by the seller and he didn't know if the rear end had been bolted on or bonded on, if it had been bonded it would have been a non starter and not worth the risk, It sold for just over £4k so was certainly a bargain for some one.
I love a cat D car, especially a low mileage one but an awful lot of buyers simply wouldn't touch one with a barge pole, another thing to consider with a donor. I know we all saw that we won't be selling the car but you just wait until you see something shinier!

I'm not building a roaring cobra. It's supposed to look like a 50's 507 which is a more sedate tourer.

Not too interested in performance and certainly no interest at all in resale value.

The M44 is the 16v DOHC with 144ps. More than enough for me. Where, outside of a track, would I get to use a 3.0 properly anyway.

I've had my car over 15 years. I'm attached to it.

If I ever do want a bigger engine I'd go for a v8 which is what the original 507 had - just for those people who do a dvla check on things to see what's in em.

If you've had it for 15 years then you should know it inside out so would make a good donor for you.

@jaguartvr can I aak. How do you describe your car on insurance?

I've done some research.

I see that many z3 rebodies have changed their v5 so it doesn't say z3.

But the few of those with updated v5 that i looked at are insured as z3.

Are they insured as z3 because the owner couldn't find his new make/model in the online application. Or because they got tired trying to explain to the insurer what rebody means.

Have a word with Adrian Flux, very helpful and they deal with lots of kits and of rebodies. My Tribute is £150 a year limited to 5k miles, when you are an old bugger like me the engine size doesn't make much difference in the premium.

My V5 has "Tribute California" in make and nothing in model, they seem to be a bit hit and miss but I was pleased that it doesn't mention BMW so I can technically say there is no build specification available to say that it should have an air bag. OK so a bit iffy but I have never had it mentioned at an MOT but was told that if it had been registered as a BMW ZS3 then it would fail on the air bag. Leave the air bag wiring in place and then you could always fit the original steering wheel at a later date if you need to.

You can change the details of the V5 on form V627/1, this you can download. Give them the least information possible, just stops them asking more questions.
It is important that you have before photos showing both front and rear with the numberplate clearly visible, also a photo of the VIN, use the one stamped in the bulkhead behind the engine, the one in the window is just a sticker.
The renaming is just that so keep it simple, you can place your body kit in position and take some photos of front rear and both sides showing the registration number clearly and a photo under the bonnet showing the Vin number. If it has lights etc attached even if not connected you can send the photos and form off with the new colour as grey, it's just a job out of the way and one less thing to worry about.

What is the make/model of your car on your insurance? If you don't mind me asking.

It is a bmw z3 rebodied as a Tribute California.

I don't know if they will have many 507's yet but if you explain that the are the same but a different shape that should do it, they really are very helpful.
My son ran his car in Z3 form for 6 months before we started the conversion and the insurance company was fine with it.

It'll be next year before I'm ready to update the v5. In the meantime it's insured as a z3 modified, full body kit and fibre glass panels.

£160 3000mls

Just done the insurance like that so I can take it up and down the road, take it for new tyres. Go to mate with full size lift etc.
