The reality is it will just have some surface rust. Very unhappy with my regular test station for starting to do this to me. Last year 1 advisory for fuel straps. This year an additional 8 for anywhere there are spots of rust. It's the same car, in the same condition but a new MOT tester and tougher rules this year. But mainly the former in my view.

I'm going to be painting the trailing arms & axle carriers on my cars from now on. Well and fuel straps, sill area, springs and shocks if required They are all fair game for advisories. The garage have also agreed to do a dummy MOT for me so I have the chance to remedy advisories as well as fails to keep the MOT record clean.

I'll bet my house on the fact there are Z3s out there with much more severely affected components than ours and that won't get an advisory. In other words, yes general toughening of standards but inconsistent interpretation of the rules are the bigger culprit for me.

Paint or grease on your brake pipes will give you an advisory under the new rules. When I asked why I was told that they can't inspect them properly if they have a coating of paint, grease or underseal and that they are not allowed to remove it.

That's absolutely correct but many cars cone from the factory in this condition so they can get an advisory on brake pipes at 3 years old. Is that sensible?

It’s worse than that really. The wording of the advisory covers both a product on the pipe and the suggestion that it may be corroded. In other words, we’re pretty certain your brake pipe isn’t corroded but we can’t be sure as there’s a bit of muck on it so to cover our backsides we’ll wipe a bit more value off your car by assuming it is corroded.
  • Nearside Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
This MOT system must be a bent garage’s dream come true.

Not to mention the fact it gives license to cover up properly corroded pipes with a product and just get an advisory.
 
If the tester can see it is corrided then they should add text to the advisory to that effect.

My brake pipes got a dose of wasxoil on Saturday, I don't mind advisories though
 
Bella went in today to assess and repair any damage post running over a mahoosive pheasant a few weeks ago, bent heat shield was all so bent back and good. No joy with the fuel gauge so a specialist auto sparky will take a look on Monday. Oh, the garage phoned ref the replacement suspension arms (rear). "Need to come from Germany, £1500 A side! I'll say that again, £1500 aside :wideyed: WTF! If they came attached to a mint Z3, yup. Not a chance, the wire brush will make an appearance :woot:

I’m flabbergasted at that price Andy. Must be some decent ones off a total with lowish miles here in GB or for that matter in USA. £3000 before you even start.:facepalm: Get some used ones and sandblast em, paint em to look like new.

Clean rust proof and protect that will sort them Andy.
Feel your pain on the part price for some of the larger items you need oxygen and a defibrillator on standby for the shockwave created by the price travelling from your ear to your brain then a millisecond later there is a minor explosion as your brain processed it :whistle::whistle::wideyed:

Same when I made the mistake of pricing new leather seat covers .
Because mine are special edition full walknappa black with yellow piping available special order at £976 + vat or the pair at £1800 + vat and I thought I would like my worn bits of piping fixed but not that much .

Was thinking if you could get them at a fair price you could clean them up at your leisure, swap them and sell the old ones on either cleaned and painted or not.
