Great thread Bozzy, enjoyed the read and they look cracking, Its one job thats on my list but I've been putting off, I really want them done for when I fit the wheels, I'm also planning on blue.
Whats the smooth finish that has been mentioned, I assume some sort of filler primer and flatting before painting.
Cheers Sean :)
I was the same, kept putting it off but after getting my wheels nicely refurbed i didn't want the look spoiled by crusty calipers and discs.
Also inspired by a few members on here that had done there's like @t-tony (who was a big help).
The smooth finish as far as I know is when the outer surface that you see when they're on the car is sanded smooth to remove rough cast finish. I used a dremel on mine to remove the worst of it,but of course it's no where near a pro finish but good enough for my first go :).
I imagine that you would achieve a high end finish with your skills and knowledge ;)......but if you struggle let me know =)).

They are very nice but subtle............but as you say the M rozzers will come and arrest your m44 ass

Steve
Subtle is exactly what I thought Steve, regarding the smooth finish, we use a filler primer that would easily do the job but I am not sure if it would stand the heat, I'll have a chat with a couple of reps this week, the problem I now have is that when the wheels are ready I would like to, paint the calipers and fit decals, fit new pads with grooved discs, lower eibach springs and wheel spacers, the Z fund is almost empty as I am moving in a couple of weeks so I guess I'll have to take my time with the wheels:mad:

I had a 2003 3 series 1.9 in for an oil leak from the filter cap on Friday afternoon, (I think the previous 10 oil changers hadn't bothered to change the large "O" ring on the cap), however I digress. This car had some plastic "Brembo" calliper covers which were as big as the real things on a Porsche Cayenne that I tested before lunch ;)

I guess if you can source a filler primer that can withstand heat it would save you a lot of prep and give a good finish. But when i spoke the owner at BCS he didn't mention anything about primer, just said to apply the paint straight on to the descaled calipers.
I know what you mean about the z fund, mine has about run out now :(.
Spacers and suspenders upgrade also on my list amongst others .
Liking your new wheels they'll look so nice when you've worked your magic on them .

To be honest if you brush paint your callipers and if they're not too crusty you don't need filler on them.. Mine are coming up to 14 years old but they cleaned up great and after 2 good coats of paint you can still read the markings cast into them.

Just a question on the decals - has anyone actually fitted them and can confirm they stay on. Putting stickers on a brake caliper that is exposed to such temperatures and elements I would have suspected would be a very temporary thing?

I am considering some type of clear coat over the top, again its just the heat problem, how hot do they actually get during normal driving, as a young lad I have had my discs glowing but I'm a little bit slower now ;)

Yesterday I got Bob off the axle stands after cleaning up and greasing the rear brake pipes that were an advisory on the mot, they weren't in a bad condition tbh. Also sprayed the hinges on the spare wheel carrier with some WD40 while I was crawling around under there.
A few pics I took between the rain, snow and sleet showers...........

I like the chrome nut cover's,had to modify the locking nut cover to get them on........
WP_20160306_11_04_59_Pro.jpg

Put a spot of glue on each one to stick them to the locking nut cover's,I put them on this morning so it no longer looks like a lovely smile with a missing tooth :D.
Would have took a pic but I got shouted at for playing with my toys again .....so I put the cover back on and went creeping......it was near dinner time and I can't cook .

Looking good Steve. The chrome nut covers I bought for my Z3 were a really tight fit and I had to file down the insides slightly to make them removable. Worth the effort though, they look nicer then bare bolts.:)
