Low mileage 9 year old water pump?

I have a 1998 z3 2.8

The water pump on it (according to service history) is 9 years old but has only done 4k miles

It is also most likely a plastic impeller one

Can I trust this water pump or should I replace it while I am doing other bits nearby?

For the money its cost and the problems it can cause if fails then i would replace it for peace of mind.

I also bought the pulleys and tensioners as well, I had one pulley squeaking so the rest will be just as worn so I thought while I’m there I may as overhaul the whole system and be done with it.

Does your car have the spring or hydraulic tensioner?

I’m sure mine has the hydraulic but you should get your part number off Realoem and search that part number but even better inspect the one fitted to your car it’s easy to remove.

There is a lot of b*******s talked about plastic impeller pumps and how metal ones are better.

Sure, early ones had issues but that was 20+ years ago. I recently replaced the failed pump on a 2002 320i E46. The impeller was fine, the bearings were not. But it was date stamped 2001. How long are they supposed to last?

I've not seen a failed plastic impeller in 20 years.

The worst pumps are the ones with the iron impellers, so heavy the bearings won't last as long.

If it's a BMW pump it will be fine.
