If you have a charger, put it on charge over night and try it tomorrow. If the dash lights dim or go out when you turn the key to start, then it's likely the battery or connections. If the lights don't dim it's likely starter motor or connections.

Tony.

ps. Wish I was nearer then I'd come and have a look for you.

I had the same problem a couple of months back, had only popped in to town and was in a loading bay

Wasnt sure what was the culprit at the time - bump started and checked voltage before and after, had risen whilst the engine was running so I was assured alternator was good.

Had a gamble and replaced the starter, turned out to be the battery.

At least they should both last a while

Lidl have very good trickle chargers for about £13 that you can leave on for a long time I think there in stock now
Well saved £40 or so, did get one from Halfords £54 but the Lidl one seemed to good to pass up, so popped in after work and got one and returned the Halfords one.
Thanks for the pointer.

Happened to me today. Turn key....clickety click, no starty.

Just an hour on the charger and it was fine again. Seems like anything less than about 11V and they don't like it.

Good job you lot are here....because I had a bit of a panic to start with as I am taking it for service and tune in the morning :nailbiting:

A code saver is one option. All you need is a plug for a cig. lighter with a length of twin core cables with croc clips on the ends with an inline fuse in the pos. lead. Plug into cig. lighter socket and connect leads to a battery observing polarity of connections. You can safely remove the battery from the boot without losing codes.

Having exactly same issues, car been in storage since October but I start it up every 2 weeks. It's on a trickle charger and said battery full. However last time only barely started, now clickety click. Disconnected and reconnected charger, rocked back and forth in gear, tried again and JUST caught and started. Pretty sure it's the battery as it was on 6 years ago when bought car and its not original BMW. Will report back with findings.

Sounds like the battery is past it's sell by date.
