Defo the Battery, give it a bump start ( push it, ignition on, let the clutch out in gear)

let it run, was light left on ?
has it been sitting?

could be just the battery going bad

no point battery will just go dead again if broke

better looking at replacement battery

just remember to find radio code before changing or use jump leads to do the change over

Sounds like starter motor to me, sticking solenoid. That said, if it is your battery not giving enough juice to kick the starter out they normally go for two reasons, one is being old and knackered, the second is the alternator, so if you fit a new battery you need to check out the circuit both with the engine off and the engine running, if you get less than 12 volts engine off the battery is knackered, and if you get less than 13 volts engine running then good chance the alternator is no good, so you need to check it out as if not diagnosed you can ruin a new battery.

Good news, just put a multimeter across the terminals now, to find what's at fault

Don't have a multimeter I suspect It was me playing in the car at night listening to cd's, instead of driving it.
Chap I got it from last November said it was a new battery, looks it.

Mine doesn't like being stood for long (3-4 weeks in the cold weather) and it won't start. I got a Ring charger/starter for Christmas last year which means if I need to move my car out of the garage and it is "flat" the starter will instantly get it going so I don't see the point in me buying a battery conditioner but agree that they are maybe good in some circumstances.

Are you connecting directly to the battery terminals or the "jump" points under the bonnet? Best direct to battery. If yours is dead flat connect jump battery and run engine on jump battery for a few minutes before trying to start yours. HTH.

Makes me wonder if the immobiliser has kicked in. Do the lights dim when you try to crank the engine?

It would only stop when I released the key. Must have been a low battery as its fine now.
