It looks as though the pulley is bent from your photo, I definitely wouldn't even start it like that.
Real OEM is a good source of diagrams, this page shows the engine.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partgrp?id=CL32-EUR-02-2000-Z3-BMW-Z3_20&mg=11

If you enter the last seven letters of your vin number on the first page it will go to the correct parts for your car. Sopers of Lincoln are are very helpful and give a discount.

https://zroadster.org/threads/welcome-to-soper-of-lincoln-bmw-parts.3137/.

The fan coupling is held on with a 32MM nut which has a LH thread, you need to somehow jam the pulley and give the spanner a sharp tap in the clockwise direction. There are tools for holding it but I have always manged to jam it with a large screwdriver.
Yours does look a bit corroded.
You will need to remove the shroud with the fan but that is just two plastic fasteners at the top.

A bit late but also welcome from Belgium! You got yourself a very nice ride, much like my first Z3! Pretty Topaz blue with amber side markers, enjoy the forum!

Yep looks like the drive shaft bearing has probably collapsed in the water pump :( definitely don't start. Good time for a new pump and belts, and as a good measure thermostat, viscous, & pulleys too.

Not sure if I've lost a drive belt I don't know about because there are some wheels with nothing attached to them!

That is the air con belt that is missing. Cars with air con should have an electric fan in front of the radiator. Some people have fixed it to use instead of the viscous one. If yours is still there and works it could be a short time solution.

Oof!

Right will have a look at these and if I can afford them at the mo... probably not so are any of them essential to get car running again for the time being? Might just a new water pump fix the prob? Whole pump can move side to side at mo. Is it the drive shsaft that is supposed to hold it in place or is that a silly question? <such a noob lol>

Will it just happen again? as there must have been too much tension pulling it to the side for some reason.
(It seems to have happened before, as the top of the shroud was re-attached before with a plastic resin - is now broken again!)

Have managed to unclip shroud and radiator for a better look but have to leave it for today. Thank you all for the help so far!

You could just change the water pump for now and reuse the rest until a later time (as long as everything else is still serviceable) though I would recommend new belts as they are not to expensive and failure leads to over heating etc.

Theres quite a few members that have changed their pumps on here so hopefully someone will jump in and give you first hand advice mines totally different so not really the best person to advise you of any pitfalls

Once you have the fan and belts off, the water pump change is self explanatory. If the pump does not pull out from it's hosing easily, there are 2 tapped holes in the flange, screw bolts into these and it will push the pump out.
One more tip, get a new radiator drain plug as they get brittle with age. I found this the hard way. :)

Hello and welcome as said its the water pump bearing that has gone the viscous looks ok but i wouldn't run it to avoid any more damage to the rad or the fan
Should be a straightforward forward swap not a massive job ....good luck and hope all goes well.

Hi Everybody

I know it's been a while but I have had assignments and things to do, but after a couple of setbacks along the way I have finally fitted my new water pump (with a new pully as the old one was scuffed, and a new belt), so thanks again for all the help and advice! Only thing is, since it has stood for a while, the battery had gone flat. Have just tried to jump it, and was excited about the moment of truth... which never came because now it's just clicking when I turn the ignition.

Does it just need a bit more charge, OR (this is what I'm woried about now) - have I immobilized it?

If so how do I overcome this!?!

(Lovely weather for it)

Sounds like either not enough power in the jump battery or a bad contact on the booster cables. I would charge the original battery and try again.
