Will give your 'how to' thread a read Tony. As an aside there appears two different length cables, out of my stock of three excellent used ones only one was the correct length so had to buy one. Ebay sellers listed ones around 1250mm and 1280mm although all stated as being for the same years. I ordered the longer one which turned out to be of 'First Line' brand - not overly impressed with the brand from past experiences but it appeared fine. The end that goes into the brake hub was of the correct shape i.e parallel sides as discussed earlier, however the outer sleeve was a little thicker and as a result wouldn't press home into the clip bonded to the fuel tank. Gutted I had to fork out 15 quid incl postage for a new one :depressed:
For reference the part number for the longer one is FKB2390, the good used ones I had but couldn't use due to being too short had the number FKB2389 on the sleeve, clearly First Line brand also. They had come off a 51 plate zed. The other niggle was the threaded ends (with flats to stop them turning) that go through the plate under the adjuster nuts at the handbrake lever were just a little fatter (same thread though) so I had to open the plate slots a little. I hate having these issues to deal with. Following pic shows the plate I mean: next pic shows the difference in length between the one I bought and the good used one that was too short:

Did mine when I had the rear beam out. They looked fine but I'd rather not have to do them later

Don't know why the pics have come out small as I clicked on 'Full Image' option :(

I used Pagid cables Adrian and had just the exact same issues too. I open the location in the back plate with a step drill then when I fitted the cables I applied a small amount of silcone to seal out the water and salt.

Tony.

Are the longer cables specific to different models? Looking at the pic of my new cables in my progress thread both are identical.

[QUOTE="t-tony, post:

I guess they all come from the same maker and just get boxed differently and priced differently Tony. Bit like buying a Cibie 7 inch round headlamp, £25 in a Cibie box, £125 in a Rolls Royce box!!

They should be the same length on each car mate. Sometimes aftermarket parts do vary a little from OEM dimensions though.

Cheers Tony. Mine are OEM from BMW. Sweating a tad there.

I guess Andy the short cables are for early narrow body 1.9's although ebay sellers list them as being for all models '97 - 03, but what do they know! The seller I used stated the longer ones were for all models '00 - 03. Should really have looked on Real-Oem website for the definitive answer.

It would make sense that the slightly longer ones were for the wide body cars?

Tony.

You won't go wrong with BMW stuff Andy, I'm tight and won't pay silly prices. As an aside what did BMW relieve you of for theirs?

Just read your progress thread @Andy McDonnell and see you're changing bonnet cables too. My bonnet pull lever was stiff too but cables looked O. K, turned out to be the catches on the bonnet slam panel. Only a little over a tenner each from BMW so would be a wise move to change them also, you'll probably find them to be the cause of your problem as I found the same issue on another zed with stiff bonnet pull. Just found the receipt, part numbers: 23.1.977.635 & 23.1.977.636 they were £10.25 each plus Al's cut.

In addition to my last message Adrian, is that the same part number for a pre facelift?
