Will give your 'how to' thread a read Tony. As an aside there appears two different length cables, out of my stock of three excellent used ones only one was the correct length so had to buy one. Ebay sellers listed ones around 1250mm and 1280mm although all stated as being for the same years. I ordered the longer one which turned out to be of 'First Line' brand - not overly impressed with the brand from past experiences but it appeared fine. The end that goes into the brake hub was of the correct shape i.e parallel sides as discussed earlier, however the outer sleeve was a little thicker and as a result wouldn't press home into the clip bonded to the fuel tank. Gutted I had to fork out 15 quid incl postage for a new one

For reference the part number for the longer one is FKB2390, the good used ones I had but couldn't use due to being too short had the number FKB2389 on the sleeve, clearly First Line brand also. They had come off a 51 plate zed. The other niggle was the threaded ends (with flats to stop them turning) that go through the plate under the adjuster nuts at the handbrake lever were just a little fatter (same thread though) so I had to open the plate slots a little. I hate having these issues to deal with. Following pic shows the plate I mean: next pic shows the difference in length between the one I bought and the good used one that was too short:
