Really good day today in the shed. Was a very cold one!

First up we started assembling the rear end so that begun with installing the beam bushes.
IMG_1241.jpeg

IMG_1243.jpeg

love freshly powder coated metal work.
IMG_1242.jpeg

next up we got the new diff bush in. Can see and old whiteness mark so someone has replaced this before. On a 50k mile car very surprised to see this. We’ve never seen this before on 100+ zeds we’ve built.
IMG_1244.jpeg

can confirm she has an LSD fitted :)
IMG_1245.jpeg

next up was the tough job. People actually arguing who’s doing this because it’s a way of keeping warm =))
IMG_1248.jpeg

Now sporting two new SKF bearings. Only quality here :)
IMG_1247.jpeg

At this stage it’s only a few more hours for the full assembly.
IMG_1252.jpeg

IMG_1253.jpeg

all the shininess.
IMG_1254.jpeg

all new handbrake assembly’s.
IMG_1257.jpeg

IMG_1259.jpeg

some bits waiting to be fitted.
IMG_1258.jpeg

So to finish the day we fitted the front subframe with new engine mounts. All ready for all the new Meyle HD’s finest.
IMG_1256.jpeg

really satisfying at this point in the build. Next weekend is a double shed day. Should get so much more done :)

Kicking off the new season in the shed we took in Gina’s 3.0. It’s a 51k mile 3.0 with exceptional history from the island of Jersey. The biggest benefit of this is they don’t salt roads out there so it’s going to be very clean and lacking corrosion.

Quick walk round. Just some nasty badges and very stock wheels.

we also noticed the typical rocking seats and both door cards lacking in handles.

very low miles

bay not been cleaned in a very long time, also showing off our new engine bay light.

looking underneath and it’s so clean

front is just as clean

typical totally shot beam bushes offering no support. There should be a finger sized gap between the plate and bottom of bush.

stay tuned for the next big update. She’s already stripped.
@paranorz Picture 10 illustrates what I believe is your issue. Middle, below trailing arm.

The rear beam subframe should sit above the chassis plates but due to bad bushings, it has sunk around 1 inch or more.

This is why your car is dragging its bum over speed bumps, not because it's on 18s or primarily because it's lowered.

All Zed Shed build threads are almost a diffinitive guide to sproosing up your z.

Not sure i have the talent for dropping out the whole rear subframe, might have to look into how much all that will cost done by a pro.

PM @Lee - if you are Southern England, why go anywhere else?

You don't need to get everything powdercoated and replaced to make a big difference to your car. The subframe bushings are only £25 quid for a pair. The rest is labour.

Reading and watching with interest, great job

I've been putting off doing a rear end dismantle and rebuild for the last 2 years on my own Z,

I start mine in the next days and hope it turns out even half as good as you guys at the Zed shed.

10/10 Guys well done

Been a mega busy few days in the shed. I spent Friday building the front end while everyone else was working :)

Was a tough start, it was -5 and the water container for tea froze so had to thaw that out.
IMG_1303.jpeg
IMG_1302.jpeg

I started off building the track rods and tie rods. This part of the build is the most fun. Assembling all the shiny new bits.
IMG_1301.jpeg

I then moved into the shocks, built both sides up.
IMG_1304.jpeg

springs look so nice freshly coated
IMG_1305.jpeg

assembled the safe way, hardest of the Z3 springs to assemble. They nearly double in length
IMG_1306.jpeg

Assembling bits now. Front knuckles look smart
IMG_1307.jpeg

then fitted along with wishbones.
IMG_1308.jpeg

Annoying the spring compressor leaves marks on the main shaft of the shocks not much we can do as it’s the way they sit.
IMG_1310.jpeg

after this I fitted the new dust shields and hubs.
IMG_1311.jpeg

really satisfying. Next up I assembled the roll bar.
IMG_1313.jpeg

completing the front hardware I also fitted the brakes.
IMG_1315.jpeg

Love the brembo painted discs.
IMG_1316.jpeg

Nice big 300mm discs on the 3.0L cars.
IMG_1317.jpeg

Looks impressive from below
IMG_1318.jpeg

Saturday started with the finishing the last few bits on the rear subframe assembly, rear brakes and setting up the handbrake
IMG_1324.jpeg

Once these bits were on it was then move the subframe into position.
IMG_1325.jpeg

IMG_1330.jpeg

didn’t take long till it was up fitted and torqued :D
IMG_1331.jpeg

as if by magic…
IMG_1334.jpeg

IMG_1335.jpeg

Low down pic, lots of visitors today so many hands made light work.
IMG_1336.jpeg

we then did some other side jobs. We sourced some door cards as the handles had broke.
IMG_1329.jpeg

we also noticed the vicious fan was permanently on when moving the car cold. Strange as the coupling we removed didn’t look old.
IMG_1326.jpeg

also along with new engine mounts we changed the gearbox mounts to make sure everything was tight. Quite a difference in height between the two (old n new), amazing really.
IMG_1332.jpeg

adding some of the smaller items and reconnecting the brakes. Really good upgrade is braided lines all round.
IMG_1345.jpeg

IMG_1342.jpeg
IMG_1344.jpeg
IMG_1343.jpeg

another post to follow.

Shortly after the front n rear subframes we moved onto the propshaft, shields and exhaust.

Rear

IMG_1355.jpeg

Just a couple of small paint touch ups to do.

front assembly
IMG_1352.jpeg

Exhaust bolts future proofed.
IMG_1353.jpeg

once we finished the underside we then started on the jobs on the inside. Gina reported bad seat rocking so we moved the seats ready for the bush kit to arrive.
IMG_1346.jpeg

team cracking on, they do love an excuse to clean
IMG_1348.jpeg

IMG_1347.jpeg

all clean n tidy now.
IMG_1349.jpeg

mega effort by everyone today, so much work done by so many people. She’s very nearly done. Seat bushes, central locking, stereo and some badges to arrive and she’s done.

Now I’m back from work I can finish off some little jobs and help get stuck in with everyone again. Today I spent some time on Gina’s 3.0. The test drive went well, she now drives perfectly, very responsive 3.0 aswell.
IMG_1575.jpeg

First job was to get the wheel alignment sorted. Now all the wheels point in the right direction.
IMG_1570.jpeg

I did have some battery issues, took it into a local garage which tested it, there must be a dead cell inside. It does look a little past its best :)
482E392A-C2E6-4C36-8FE9-796C6CA1789D.jpeg

no problem though, a new Yuasa battery with a 3 year warranty did the job nicely.
IMG_1571.jpeg

During the test drive I went through the normal testing everything. Found the car had no hot air and noticed after a good half hour drive the engine couldn’t maintain temp. So I’ll we’ll need to replace the thermostat.
IMG_1572.jpeg

I also had a play with the stereo but they sound pants without using the cars in built amp.
IMG_1574.jpeg

now just waiting on a boot badge and boot mech. Central locking now all working, boot lock was causing the main fuse to blow. Seats now nice & stable too. :D

So today we finished the last jobs on Gina’s car. We started off doing the thermostat.
IMG_1623.jpeg

thermostat removed
IMG_1622.jpeg

compared to the new one. Can see it’s been replaced before, the old one had no branding.
IMG_1621.jpeg

In and now left to warm up.
IMG_1624.jpeg

yay we now have a normal running temp and plenty of hot air coming through the vents. Holding steady at idle.
IMG_1625.jpeg

we also addressed the central locking issue with the boot lock. Replacement solenoid compliments of Spurs got the central locking all working again.
IMG_1626.jpeg

we also had a look at the OE wind deflector Gina asked if we could look at it. Unfortunatly it’s missing all its rear tabs and front hooks. Luckily we had a spare clear wind deflector. Free one as it was a damaged one in our stock.
IMG_1627.jpeg

and lastly the final touches being the boot badge. We let quality control fit the badge.
IMG_1611.jpeg

I think the only jobs left for Gina when it comes out of storage is to sort a new head unit. This one seems to only like disco colour mode and nothing else. She’s now ready for many more years to come.
