This may be 5 years late but as there's already a thread on this thought I'd ask in here rather than create a new one.

Can the carrier be unscrewed without cutting the cable? I'm considering removing the spare but it would be nice to have the option to fit it back on should I want to do so in the future.

When I removed mine I couldn't unscrew the steel cable,so I cut a slot in the plastic handle and pulled the wire through.
At least that way it can be reinstalled and be serviceable.

Thanks I don't like chopping bits off, so from the previous posts as well as what you've said @Bozzy I imagine that by design you should be able to unscrew it, however, after time it seizes and prevents you from simply unscrewing?

It is screwed in, there is no need to cut it off. Every sub frame refurb we've carried out in the shed has had that part unscrewed, irrespective of year or model.

Try gripping the hex section with mole grips or an adjustable spanner if you don't have a small enough spanner. Maybe a soak in WD40 for a while to assist.

Well you can always learn some thing new. I decided to do the same job last week end and I looked in the tool kit to see if the spanner was there to undo that nut over the black cap, in the end I got a spanner out of tool box I'd have never thought to look at the plastic lowering handle.

What inflation kit are you guys using and do they work, I need to remove my spare as its about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.

I would just like to add something on the spare wheel thing
A defective spare is Not an mot fail it is an advisory item
If you fit it to the car thats different but the spare in itself is not a testable item :)

Hi Sean, I bought one of Andy's (@spurs fan in a coupe) genuine Kia 12v inflators and a can of Tyre weld (large) I carry these in the boot and hope I never need to use them. Have the same kits in Shirl's Eos too as it also was on run flats. I would think there's enough sealer in the small cans but perhaps not enough "air" to re inflate the bigger tyres, hence the compressor.

Tony.

I took look at my spare today, rusty, yes, crap in the carrier, yes... My God it's heavy! ..quick question, I understand from this thread no Tyre is fine for MOT but I'd rather try and restore the carrier and just leave it empty and save the weight.

Just to confirm @Stevo7682... No spare with carrier and cage remaining is still OK?

I will follow advice and buy a good size can of tyre weld.

You are ok with an empty carrier so long as the spare is not in there it's not an mot failure. But if it's in there it has to be inflated and in legal condition.

I didn't think the spare wheel was checked for the MOT but am no expert and am likely wrong.:(

I was fortunate , other half bought a Nissan QQ with pump inflators and gung , bought her a proper spare wheel and pinched the other bits. Very good buy on the spare ,on eBay included the jack brace ect. RAC now have a wheel to put for her.
Think it's about time I took the little wheel of the Zeedie now, because if I ever need to put it on ,what am supposed to do with the wheel that comes off,no way will she have it on her knee.

When did the vosa change that rule ? Because had my Discovery fail because tyre tread was not legal and was told that if it's there it can be used which because of tread depth would make it elegal to use, hence it failed.
