Still trying to get this thread up to date :)

One apology first, I've read trough my lasts few posts and I realize that my spelling and language is a bit off sometimes. But I guess you all survive :)

Anyway after the X-mas and New Year celebrations was done, my "car" itching started again and it was soon due for some icetrack racing with the hellrot. Before the events I wanted to make sure that everything was sorted out and OK to go (oil level, battery level etc...). This resulted that I also finally got around to install the "new" handle on the glow compartment lid.

Old vs New:

pic1.thumb.jpg.be8f92ba265d7afdd78a9ee35191e852.jpg

This is literally a 2 minutes job, where you spend most of the time getting seated correct with the work light :)
pic2.thumb.jpg.40b200fefa7ff12e4f50b27cc6b631b9.jpg

Also had mate/co-driver on the icetrack events coming over with some "new" studded tyres and to put them onto the car. And yes, it was a cold afternoon. Just a note on the studded tires, the ones I use is road legal and can be used on the road to the track. There is another version which has much longer and stronger studs, however this are not road legal. But they do perform a lot better of course on the track and is much more fun. However the ones I use do give a lot of fun as well :)
pic4.thumb.jpg.ece83dd0a3dcc7d7fe093c3fc7f98007.jpg

Since my friend (co-driver) never really had tried the a Z3 on winter roads, we did at little (ok, with some detours) trip to the gas station checking air pressure and let him test the car a bit.
pic5.thumb.jpg.d695cb1c804605f9bc83dd1f4bd53f88.jpg

With the car ready and co-driver motivated to drive, all we needed to do now was to wait for the weekend arrive.

First event was at a frozen lake about 2.5h drive from our location, so we got up early to be there in good time and actually had "lunch" at 7am in the morning :)

pic1.thumb.jpg.581a0b3ed4442fb0a3ce26094af57ad8.jpg

We made it to the "track meeting" and technical check point in good time and finally at 9am the sun started to give us some light so we could drive. In line to get onto the track.
pic3.thumb.jpg.6583584664d4018a768989d42c43358d.jpg

The car behaved nicely the whole day, except that on the last leg the oil lamp came on. However when we stopped to check this it turned off again and the level was good. To be honest the Z3 is not an easy car to drive on ice tracks with and the studded tires where not good (to worn). However it was great fun and we got our skills tested quite good a few times:)

Got a short video here, is not the best one (was from one of the first laps we did), but you get an idea. (I'm the one driving)

Some more random pics from this event:

The following week we had quite some snow here in Norway, so after a day the Z3 looked like this:
pic8.thumb.jpg.26b4cbf49a0c87937e4255514c3978f8.jpg

Took me some time and effort to get it back on the road again:

The weekend after Norwegian Sportcar club had setup an event on icetrack which was located on the fields to one of the members of the club. So we went there as well with the hellrot. This time I had my oldest daughter and my nephew with me as well another friend as co-driver. The kids absolutely loved it and spent the whole day playing in the snow and getting trips on the track with me. This is the first time my oldest daughter has shoved interest and joy of being with me in these Z3's. The same night when we got home, she asked me when next event was (my nephew is already car crazy).

The cool thing with this event was that we got to test several cars and I got the chance to test a Subaru on the track. And I must say that car really outperformed the Z3 on ice/winter conditions.

Any a small video from this event as well:

And some pics:

So this how we "play with cars" in winter time over here in Norway, while we wait for the summer to arrive again.....

Thank you for an insight into what you guys get up to in the winter. Please also show us some pictures of you country in the summer months too. Happy to hear your daughter is showing interest in your hobby, my eldest was interested in fishing with me when she was young. Could get up at 5.00 in the morning to go fishing but struggled to get up at 8.00 for school.;)

I love watching iceracing and wish one day to give it a go! My Zed sits around for at least half the year or more so this would be a good way to keep it loose over our long winters. Guess I'm gong to have to finish the interior of my shop this summer and put some heat in also! Great videos by the way!! JIM

Be careful with what you ask for :) I might be spamming this thread with a lot pics from Norway. I do plan use the cars a lot this season both tracking and trips! Hopefully I have two trouble free cars the whole summer.

Thanks for sharing again looks great fun as for you English far surpasses anyone’s Norwegian but I think I must be getting better though as I’m sure I heard oh sugar pants on a few of those bends.
There where a few "oh s***" yes :) Icetracking can be tricky , you can get sense of control and having fun. And then suddenly you are off the track in deep snow.

Winter is about to leave! Uhm not really :-/ The winter this year in Norway seems like a never ending chapter, normally around this time we would have gotten ridden of all the snow and I would have started up my stored Zed for the first time.

This is not the case this year, we still have temp around 0 degree and lots of snow outside.

So I've been sticking to the Hellrat instead with fun it gives on icy roads. Anyway the Hellrat got a minor upgrade lately, the old gear knob had broken tabs. Causing it to come of now and then, especially under "spirited" driving.
I'm a big fan of the ZHP knob, however I wasn't keen on spending big $ for knob for the budget car. So after some time online I managed to source one that looked like a good ZHP clone in leather for about 14$ US. Decided to give it a try.

First impression was good, albeit it is not near the weight as the genuine ZHP knob.
pic4.thumb.jpg.e6f69b16a3eb1572a299f0e0b742c9c2.jpg

Old OEM one on its way out:
pic1.thumb.jpg.1ab792d882535c9badb17f8e7e992950.jpg

All tabs broken except one:
pic2.thumb.jpg.bdfc086a6503924beea13cc1b059043c.jpg

New one installed, works fine and is good enough for this car.
pic5.jpg.6d923ff998f1b5d481014d065eaff7f8.jpg

And then I decided to participate on the last Ice driving event for this year. I showed up in good time and it turned out that I was the first one to arrive, so I got the track all by my self in the start:)

pic0.thumb.jpg.304909c3ffa0a1b7be697020d4605c0f.jpg

But after a few rounds of playing, I ended up as we all do on ice tracks:) Completely stuck in the snow!

pic2.thumb.jpg.e9508060d20a41454ec8468c702e1a87.jpg

However the car survived and everything checked out.
pic1.thumb.jpg.7a0cae07ad6e718e75c021c92d997c50.jpg

I also played a quite a lot with this car, great fun this little 4wd on such tracks. Performs nicely and provides good handling!
pic3.thumb.jpg.44464fa9843da72c9eee1470a6046f17.jpg

Anyway on my way home I soon noticed that something was not right with the Hellrat. The car now was handling poorly and it felt that I had broken rim or similar. Felt like I was using two lanes on the highway to keep it straight.

Got home, took the front wheels of to look for damages. And sure enough, I had a blown right shocker and the left shocker felt similar soft.
So no more driving before a minor suspension overhaul is done:-(
pic4.thumb.jpg.74ea8b0665de2de432e1f09f6aa6b720.jpg

So now both my Zeds are sitting and waiting for this never ending winter to "die".

The plan for the Hellrat now is now:
  • Install new springs and shockers on all 4 wheels (ordered)
  • Change of thermostat
  • Ventilated Brake upgrade ( I have set of front brakes from a Z4 that I hope fits, same partnumber as Z3 2.8)
  • More minor rust work to keep the rust away for some more time
Hopefully the new springs/shocks arrives soon. So I can start the overhaul asap and get the car ready for track season!

This thread has been neglected....

A lot has happened lately with the Hellrat, is has undergone a complete shock/spring replace and the Z3M has been on a few exhibitions and road trips already. Love this time of the year :)

Anyway a quick summary on the work the Hellrat can be illustrated with these pictures:

Up in the air:
pic10.thumb.jpg.5c136f3ffebf38726c8fa1ae0a1869f8.jpg

So happy I have friends to help me out:
pic2.thumb.JPG.d40d913e99a0d9038043e65ad4c84b9e.JPG
pic5.thumb.JPG.b596f5b06e6015e1b73fb38ae534d30c.JPG pic7.thumb.JPG.14733c34902dc45d69a9ec4be0dd9e4d.JPG

With the final result:
pic4.thumb.JPG.626d5996f57a375f79890cf25d4c60ed.JPG

And here we started to react on the rear height, so no entirely happy with this setup for now. But now the car is driveable again and ready for some fun.

Then I managed get some extremely cheep E90+ rims for about 40£ and a set of Michelin Primacy HP tires (2012) for 40£ where the rubber was still soft and nice. However the rims where plastidipped and looked awful. But no cracks and they are straight, but ugly :)

pic0.thumb.jpg.46d5d3f94db0e8ab094c890713959826.jpg pic1.thumb.jpg.5fe6213eb90742941b32961ea4f48f16.jpg

Then I managed to source a parts car, thats a small accomplicement here in Norway. One of my Zed friends ended up with buying it.
That meant more work for us with parting the car.

pic3.thumb.jpg.e5576c4fa71b0b12d43b7a9e1b052e83.jpg pic2.thumb.jpg.e38db99998960b2ff9ed7b4bace1f834.jpg

In between all this I managed to fit in some time to actually enjoy these wonderful cars, with some roadtrips with my local club.

pic4.thumb.jpg.4dbce5590e0733f1a1fa90253cc7853f.jpg
And I was pleasant to see that I no longer was the only local guy to drive a Z3M:)
pic5.thumb.jpg.6e9728230b383c9a241d9980c2bf9d63.jpg

Then we had few exhibitions to attend to:
pic10.thumb.jpg.65181a8ed385f32fc081649e4c5f9436.jpg
Another exibition, where a club member showed up in his Z1. Love these cars! (my old 2.8 and my current Hellrat on picture)

pic3.thumb.jpg.4c93467996decde11d31fb26019b9de2.jpg

After the suspension repairs, I've actually been driving it a lot more and enjoying curvy roads. So I've been "stealing some time" in the evenings to enjoy short trips with it:)

Then finally seasons first trackday was here!

I showed up in the Hellrat and it is safe to say that it is seriously underpowered compared to the other cars :)
But that didn't stop the Hellrat, passed the technical control. With one remark: "Wash the engine till next time".

pic4.thumb.jpg.a39ef5d048ea29d9987931593cf0924e.jpg
pic9.thumb.JPG.40af0a0b031103321b77684aea6f5714.JPG

After a few rounds on the track, it seemed that car would hold up seen from a technical side. But it was pretty clear that the brakes would not last many rounds, before getting to warm. (I still havn't been able to put on the vented set I have in storage). But we did find a nice rhytm with 3-4 rounds + 1 cooling round + some parked cooling time. This worked fine the whole day (8 hours).
pic7.thumb.jpg.9972a45ea61047d231af595b8547af7b.jpg

As we got better to drive and push the car. It was pretty clear the the new suspension is not holding up good enough on the track :-/
So the lokaris got some hard time troughout the day.
(These where undamaged before we started)
pic6.thumb.jpg.60d871d946ff2da2c375a2e89a93ac34.jpg

Some more pics and a video:
pic8.thumb.jpg.eacd8d7f1bfbcbae4e0352e68d4bc926.jpg

pic11.jpg.e115314125989c636238611fc831240e.jpg

To sum up:
The Hellrat is great fun to drive on track, the 1.9 engine is a bit underpowered. But for a novice drivers like myself is it challenging enough to pic the correct line and brake at right spot. But there is room for some improvement on the technical side, so after getting some input from some experienced drivers. This "todolist" was made:
  • Brake upgrade to vented disk and new pads (in storage)
  • Change to stiffer springs (a fellow Zeder has a kit in storage for me)
  • Get better track tires (another fellow Zeder has set of Toyo R for me )
So it will be some workshop time for me before the next trackday:)

Untill next time:

Looks like you had a great day out, You can see how bad the rolll is in that photo with the back well lifted up. Maybe some stiffer anti roll bars as well would help. You could get. Some other tips from @spurs fan in a coupe has you’ve most likely read his track day weapon no doubt.
Was a great day yes! Still missed some power, but fun to try get some decent runs with a small engine. I hope that the planned "upgrades" will help out a bit on next trackday. But the Hellrat Z is a budget car, so I'm trying to keep the costs down on this one.

Skillwise one of my "new" Zed friends is a very talented driver here in Norway (he races alot and often wins his classes), he will give me a few private runs on next trackday and teach me a bit more about details while tracking. Good spirit and companionship in the local club here:)

Spring time again, this means that it is time for the annual spring trip with the Norwegian sportscar club again.

This year the route was Lier - Gol - Stalheim - Voss - Sogndal - Fagernes divided over 4 days of driving, about 950km's of beatiful moutain and fjord roads . Once the again the car club had everything sorted out with hotels and resturants, so we could focus on driving and enjoy the nature.

The route:
pic11.png

We had 4 perfect days and could drive in "topless mode" the entire trip.

Last year there only a few zeds on the trip, this year we were in total 10 Zed cars out of 55 cars. So we are a large group when we go on trips and do raise some attentions when we arrive places :)

Start location:
pic2.thumb.JPG.df8b10888b356186585478ebc70a4393.JPG

First stop at the Storefjell hotell, the parking lot was pretty full :)
pic4.thumb.JPG.0ec6ebbced871fc5c945215110981f44.JPG

The Z3M is quite thirsty, so better give her a full tank when in the mountains. Never know when you see a gas station next time.
pic5.thumb.JPG.e73087eb982bdcca88b3c55ad8caa2b8.JPG

When driving in the Norwegian moutains, one get a quite a few nice nature experience. But some of them are stronger than others. When we arrived the Strandavatnet (a small lake in the moutains), we experienced summer temp (over 20C), but still snow around us and the lake was partially frozen.

pic7.5.thumb.JPG.21d97211238ceeff4f05f9b329bbd5f3.JPG

I got "hit" with some temporary madness and needed to get some energy out :)
pic7.thumb.JPG.85f8032fedca464bfced427f772fbea1.JPG

But the main focus is not the nature, but also having some fun while driving:)

Still a lot of snow in the mountains:)

We had cross the sea twice on the trip...

Not often get the take photos from top, looks almost like a small playcar:)

4 happy Zeds on the way home from the trip.

All cars behaved well on the trip and we really had fun doing the trip. The Zeds are perfect on narrow mountain cars with a lot of turns and climbs. Having the top down does really give you a different experience, feels like 360degree experience :)

Really recommend you take your Zed if you plan to come visit Norway!

Time to get this thread update again.

So was time to get the Hellrat upgraded with some better brakes and H&R sport "something" springs. I also needed to speed up my work to be finish before next trackday.

So about time to get some work done:
pic1.thumb.jpg.eef592b5870e8e2fa0241b022b21ee72.jpg

I started with the replacing the rear springs, done this a few times now. So this went pretty quick.

"old" vs "new" spring (H&R is the orange one to the right):
pic2.thumb.jpg.89e878d1b66c00f337b440bd74b9875f.jpg

Went straight in:
pic3.thumb.jpg.722936c8f47665e65e7a08220d195e9b.jpg

The "before" and "after", notice the height difference in the rear. More balanced now (front springs not yet replaced on this pic)

pic4.jpg.d5eb986a97b3f48924ed3c88fd2a838a.jpg

Then since I had things off in the front I could start look into upgrading the brakes, this winter I bought a set of Z4 front brakes (calipers and wented disc) from a 2.5L. But I did a small assement and discovered that one of the caliper needed an overhaul with new dust caps etc.

pic6.jpg.20b3d04d131eeba973b6663ff308917a.jpg
pic5.jpg.8a38b8eedcc42ec4760b80687ac430e8.jpg

So a repair kit was ordered and the rest of the night was spend to wash the rest of the brakes parts and get things ready for the day after.

pic7.jpg.53491e2d7d73bc3c929185dda05680c6.jpg

Got a nice package the day after with a repair kit for the caliper and new brake pads (front and rear) called "GS Performance" which is basically made by EBC (yellow).
pic8.thumb.jpg.390f263c17300f8921b59343c9d34504.jpg

Have to admit that I did waste some time to get the caliper back together again. Not that easy to get the piston straight in:)

pic9.thumb.jpg.7563eb66c72f7be58e1e349394e0d7b8.jpg

Time to get all 1.9 brakes of the car, the state of these were horrible....

pic10.thumb.jpg.9889e01ef5f185ae8076b0c61f3730f6.jpg

Did find some signs that the last trackday did put it mark on the car.
pic11.jpg.375b5857402915458be174363365baa8.jpg

Since I just got my brake fluid flushed and upgraded to dot 5.1, I didn't want to loose to much of this. So I tried a trick I've learnt somewhere.
Worked quite nice and spilled almost no brake fluids.

pic12.jpg.89407e94a97150187a8cdb63234087d9.jpg

Then was time to find the rest of the brake stuff, but were was my "new" brake disc. Had put them somewhere smart last winter...
But not smart enough, now they where covered with surface rust.... They were fine when I bought them.

pic13.jpg.51ef864634d04ca746fb58720dcc2e4d.jpg
pic15.jpg.15ff4b4b1942547e0764fbaf9f53e87b.jpg

But managed to wash them with some rust remover and bring them back to life again.

pic14.JPG.e8c977ee0a5577cc87e590232c76f78e.JPG

Got the disc on the car and started installed the brakepads.

pic16.JPG.d05f581d82e8ccba0a7560450e7a5298.JPG

Finally done! Z4 Vented disk, brake hose and calipers on a 1.9'er a bolt on upgrade.
pic17.thumb.jpg.c8364d54b416b2e436af2765909a3d68.jpg

pic18.jpg.dde0fc4de4794d0f655af81ff11215bd.jpg

Couldn't wait to test drive, so after some airing. I had to take a quick test drive and what a difference. The pads where not even bedded in, but I suddenly had brakes again compare to the old set.

To be continued....

Time to finish the upgrades...

My Z3M was at this time parked at my parents garage, snapped this photo. I kinda like it.

Next task now was to install the rear brake pads and inspect the calipers and disc. Luckily everything checked out, the rear disc looked bad. But is in better state than the look, so they can be used this season. The calipers where moving nice a gentle, but I did service the "gliders" just to be on the safe side.

Then I was thinking why not try the "fogged airbox" think on this little girl. So I went shopping and did a quick airbox hack.

Was not a massive difference, maybe a little better over 5500. Not a life changing improvement (have used it for some time now, still don't really feel the difference).

Continued with changing the front springs to finish of this round with upgrades.

Red spring: TA technic - ok on street. But useless on track
Black spring: OEM spring - ok, but very soft both on street and track. OK for ice tracking.
Orange spring: H&R sport "something" - ok on street but not tried on track at this stage.

The spring replacement went pretty fast, but next time I'll make sure to have a mate over. A lot easier todo this with 4 hands available.

But now the car was ready for next trackday!

The before and after shoot in 3 variants:
1. TA technic - to high in back and to low in front. Soft.
2. H&R in rear, nice and stiff and TA technic in front.
3. H&R on all 4 corners and gained some front height. And notable stiffer on street, big improvement.

Also got did a last minute upgrade, I borrowed a strut bar from a friend! And did a serious engine wash!

New brake pads worked fine, but dusted a lot.

After a few rounds I could assess that the new brakes and brakepads was a massive improvement. However my suspension is still to soft:-/ Any managed to get 28 laps this afternoon, did spent quite some time to understand the car. And the first 15 or so laps I struggled a lot to improve my best lap time with this car. But after a break and brainstorming with more experience drivers. We agreed that I could most likely push the limits on the tires a lot, since I have street tires that start to sing their "tune" way before they actually do loose grip. Tried that a few rounds and ended up with improving my best time with over 4 secs.

But this week was great, since I had another trackday on the following Sunday as well.

Did my usual track prep and went with a mate for a full day of tracking:)

Also met a fellow Zed'er from the BMW Z Norway group (I'll describe more about that group in a later post).

Anyway the first part of the day the track was full of cars and we had keep constant eye for faster car. (really a draw back by tracking a weak car). Well at this stage we both could keep up with faster cars in the turns and bends on the track, but to loose them in the straight and catch up again with them again in turns and bends.
But we had a lot of fun. On the afternoon the less cars where on the track and we could start to really hunt lap times. I had one goal and this was to the car under 2 minutes with the current setup. According to Harrys laptimer, I should be able to do 1:56 if I nail every turn and turn exits. Pushed the car really hard, but kept getting times like 2:00:44 and 2:00.48 etc..
But then finally I managed to hit the one of the difficult turns perfect and I got 1:59.96 even having to let faster car bypass in next turn, my day was made. In comparison the above pictured Z4 3.5is, best lap was 1:58.xx. Better drivers will of course be on low/mid 1:4x and best drivers with fast car on high 1:3x. (my Z3M's best lap is 1:41.x)

Anyway another great trackday and learned a lot. And now new target is 1:55 with this car. But might invest in some better tires and some coilovers if I can find some decent ones on budget.

A picture taken by a track photografer (Roy Hansen), which shows how soft the car is. Also note how soft the sidewalls on my street tires are.
