Hard to say without actually seeing it for real, but if it's only the ends that are corroded it's quite often possible to replace just the rotten bits. Having to do the bit in the middle, which has been behind the heat shields all its' life, isn't necessarily needed. Still, having not seen it myself, it's hard to say exactly what yours needs.

Thanks. I have spoken to the garage. They say the rear ends were the part that failed the MOT however, on inspection, the fronts are also heavily corroded (20yr old car). As such they recommended replacing both front to rear pipes, and the rear to wheel sections. The fronts were acceptable. Quoted 5hrs work for this …£££

The front to rear pipe can be made in 2 sections which makes it easier to fit. 5 hours sounds a lot to me.

Words from mechanic below:

The whole front to back pipe needs replacing as its rotten at front end too. Evap system will have to be removed..just ordered a new roll of 5 metre pipe/fittings as it will take about 4 metres plus roughly.

Z3 pipe is full length of the car over subframe. From abs pump to rear axle.

from the manager:

So reading between the lines it appears that rather than cut into just the rear pipe work (as mentioned on MOT as a fail)….Gary needs to replace to pipe from the rear right up to the ABS pump.

so they plan to feed the pipe around the subframe, replace both front to rears and rear to wheel - £530!!!

Hard to tell but on some cars they rot where you can’t see the pipe. One example is one of the Vauxhall cars (can’t remember which one) but the pipe was above the exhaust heat shield across the rear axle. One time we had such a car come back with owner hopping mad as his brakes had failed ( understandable) , my boss came to me in a similar frame of mind, until I showed him where the burst pipe was. He said, “ I can’t see it!” , I said, “ Well neither could I!”

Like I said, hard to tell without seeing it. Doesn't take long to drop the heat shield off and have a good look.
As an aside, I had a Saab in for MOT back when I had to work for a living, the brake rollers were in front of the ramp so I tried the brake test as I went on. Pedal to the floor almost immediately, front to rear had burst above the fuel tank, couldn't be seen without taking the tank out. Strangely enough I failed it.

Hi all...I'm contemplating replacing all the brake lines and flexis on my Z3. As others have said its normally just the corners that go. I replaced the front discs, calipers front nearside flexi and brake line a couple of years back, but as all four corners run to flexi's on brackets, these nearly always rust up and you might have to dremel them off. This is why I'm planning on doing the whole lot.
