@Davyhoogy I'll look up something I posted a while ago on brake pipe replacement.

Which pipes is it exactly Dave .
Is it the 2 rears along the rear arms or is it the ends of the 2 front to rear where they meet the flexi at the rear of floor .
If it's the 2 short ones along the trailing arms it's a bit dear ( Dave you know where I work we would charge probably about £50 per pipe for the short ones) but if it's the 2 front to rear and they are replacing the entire pipe then we would also be about £100 per pipe.

I'm not sure Steve It just says rear. If I do it myself I would probably do them all anyway.

Brake pipes themselves aren't that hard to make if you have the correct flairing tools.
The 2 biggest problems you tend to have are getting the old corroded pipe ends out of whatever they are screwing into and sometimes ( especially on front to rear) the actual routing of the pipe can be a nuisance do to other components being in the way.
That when having the car up on a ramp helps immensely.
I would still maybe phone a couple of places some places up here still do brake pipes at next to no money.

That' the one I was looking at. Is it easier if I drop the axle? Diff bush and frame bushes could do with replacing if I'm messing on
I found it to help alot they pass around the beam and up and over the diff if your doing bush work and its out it will make it alot easier.
I jointed just before the last clamp on the floor pan.

Little can be seen back in.

It is doable but its alot easier to make it look right when nothings in the way !!

All,

I have just had the same issue. MOT fail due to a single brake pipe leaking and corroded. Quote for 2-3 hrs work sub £200. They also noted all pipes were in various states or corrosion and offered a full car replacement of around £750 for 8-10 hours work depending on the actual states. Comments?

£200 to repair/replace one brake pipe sounds a lot to me. 2 - 3 hours work? When I worked for myself I priced brake pipes at 1 hour each, regardless of which one it was.

Could buy a whole car for that. As mentioned above, not too hard or expensive to do yourself, given a jack and some stands. Leaves a load of money for nice shiny things.

Certainly in my work a front to rear pipe
usually £100 mark ( unless difficult access) a short one £30 /40 anything else somewhere in between depending on pipe length .
Done a cut and shut front to rear on a zed 3 last week ( cut from half way along floor to rear flexi ) charged £80 plus a fluid bleed at £19.95.

Just done my wife’s 3.0 ,the problem for me was the corrosion, everything that could break did so make sure you have all the brackets, hoses ,connectors before tackling the job or you’ll be stuck hanging around for parts to arrive.
All the brake clips, brackets for pipes etc are available from BMW and at reasonable prices. Wouldn’t even attempt to replace the corroded hard lines without new braided/ rubber flexible lines.
Wanted to hide the two inline joiners under the heatshield that protects the fuel filter just for aesthetics but gave up after both clamps for the pipes on the underside of the car sheered trying to remove the screws, that was after copius amounts of release spray!

Thanks all, the truth is - I’m not going to do the job on my own (not experienced or equipped at all). As such I’m tied to local garages. I have phoned around and got similar quotes.

No shame not doing yourself. It’s one of those easy if you know how jobs. It’s definitely not changing a light bulb easy.

But the prices quoted to you are too expensive. Garages must make half their profits on anything to do with brakes, especially disks and pads!

Apparently the corroded part at the rear, that failed the MoT, runs the length of the car and is also corroded at the front. The mechanic says all 4m needs replacing and this involves removing the evap system? Sounds expensive? Thoughts? Attached are some screen shots of a video they have sent.
